Hi, since I got my car it has a scratched rear windscreen from previous owner using wiper with no blade.

It's quite noticeable and ruins the look of my car from certain angles (unfortunately camera doesn't pick it up that good!)

My insurance will charge £75 for Autoglass to replace it, I was just wondering if you guys have any advice on if it's cheaper to get it done private and what your opinions are on whether it is repairable or not (although I don't think it is).

Hopefully you can see a little bit in the images of what it is like.

My rear ' screen, was scratched up like that,
ipresume its where last owner has tried clearing off the screen in the frost by using the wiper,

over the time ive been cleaning the car up plenty of polish and compounds'
ive buffed away at the glass its hardly notice-able now,

to claim for a new screen it'd mean giving it a tap with heavy object,
(n)

*.the last screen that went on me on a motorway insurance company was using A/G 3 day wait for them to come out iended up getting a screen fitter at a scrapyard to cut the old one out and fit another one off a breaker in the yard, 25 for a screen and 35 for fitting it,

I've attempted to polish it by hand with glass cleaners..maybe I should get the buffer out with some compound and try that

Was guessing they wouldn't class it as enough damage to repair..it's very noticeable in person, camera doesn't catch them but scratches run across entire length of glass

Thanks

unless minor you wont get the scratch out
jewelers rouge was the way forward before perestroika when everything was controlled
new glass or second hand good
dont do it yourself
i did one a while back wont do another
it takes less than a minute to ruin the back screen with a bad blade,i joined that club this year

Firstly, most insurance policies indemnify loss against breakages. Some will allow a scratched windscreen replacement on the basis that it might fall under their description of damage, and that it is a forward facing glass. However, most fitting companies will be keen on fitting and therefore will not observe this rule despite being required to make an assessment on behalf of the insurance company.

Secondly, why risk loading your premium on renewal? Given this is a rear window, it may have more of an impact on your claims than a windscreen.

If you can pick up a decent secondhand one, this will be your better option IMHO. By taking the new glass, via your insurer, you won't get a genuine FIAT branded glass; it'll be the same in terms of how it looks, but will not be as good quality as OEM.
