Just renewed the pads on the rear of my Stilo 1.4, 50,000 miles, 5 years old. This was the first rear pad change and the originals were about 75% worn. However, their backing plates were disintegrating and they were fairly well stuck in their spring clips. Easiest way to get them off was to undo the two 17mm bolts of the caliper cradle and ease the whole cradle plus pads off the disc. Having the cradle off the car makes it easier to renew the spring clips and to inspect the sliding pins for free movement in their bores. Winding back the pistons was fairly easy with a proper tool but make sure the notch holes on the faces of the pistons are horizontal when you finish winding as a peg on the inside pad has to match up with one of the notches on the piston. The small rubber gaiters on my handbrake cables had perished. I cut them away and applied Girling brake grease to the exposed cables.
