Ok my 98 mk 1 hgt has been getting really really bad mpg lately im taking sub 10 its overfueling really bad.

my temp needle on my dash sit at 0 like the lowest it goes when moving along but when i sit idling for a while it goes to half way. but as soon as i start moving again it goes back to 0.

i think the thermostat is the roblem... is it an easy fix as in can i change it myself? or are we talking an engine out job or something silly?

tonight i did £20 in 47 miles.... thats driving like a grandad

you can change the thermostat yourself, and what you diagnosed as a thermostat failure, is exactly that. Being an HGt i would say you will definitely need to remove the battery and the battery tray (i'm assuming its a similar layout to my 1.8) to access it. My tip, is to buy lots of jubilee clips, in lots of sizes, because the ones you think fit, usually dont, and you cant re-use the OE ones would you believe.
as for fuellig, thats too technical for me. The thermostat would probably only contribute 2 or 3 mpg to your problem, so its not just the thermostat i'm afraid.

New thermostat needed, its the cause of all your problems.

Imagine driving a proper car with the choke out all the time.

47 miles for £20 though. That really cant be just the thermostat?!?! mine was gone and i must have lost about 30 miles from each full tank. We're talking a loss of 20mpg here! not 3

There are many stages of 'gone'. Ranging from almost working perfectly to completely fooked.
