So by your definition all films written solely with women in mind are chick flicks and can be no other genre. As I said lazy thinking

As for Bridesmaids, the female side of the wedding is simply a vehicle for the story and the dresses themselves were there to make the food poisoning scenes even worse/funny delete as applicable. I'd say the film was written to appeal to both sexes hence the gross-out scenes and yes I know that's stereotypical of me :)

Btw, Ryanfaescotland says he enjoyed watching it - are you calling him a girl ;)
 
that is the actual definition of chick flick..... a movie aimed mainly towards women audiences usually with a element of romance and emotion....


Mr feigs own description of bridesmaids was a comedy/romance with elements of a chick flick... something for everyone but not one you would take your boyfriend to see.....



i get what your saying and im not denying it is definatly a comedy but i think you think were putting down women in movies or something??? i think something that is about a wedding that is romentic and a comedy but said by the director as not one for your boyfriend.... gotta fall under the chick flick catagory.

got both sides of the argument there and pretty much sums up why i think it falls under the catagory of chick flick but also why it doesnt... i think for this one its just how you see the movie in your own perspective (that and chick flick means something different for everyone).


oh just noticed you edited out misogynistic.... just want to add i have no hatred of women, i just think there are alot of women who are in the opinion that men do... even though they dont...

I just use chick-flick as a way to describe a genre, I guess rom-com would pretty much cover the same thing except chick-flicks are normally a bit more rom and a little less com and geared even more towards women.

I'd agree that Bridesmaids is far from your typical one and that's what my comment was meant to convey, that although its premise is a film about a women getting married and her friend's struggle to fulfil her role as bridesmaid it totally blind sides you with it's actual content.

I think the real upset here is coming from the thought that I'm using chick-flick to be negative when I'm really not, like I said I just use it as a loose term for a genre much like I'd use Zombie film to describe 28 Days Later even though technically it's not.




EDIT - The geek in me wants to point out that I would actually describe 28 Days Later as survival horror if I was talking about it somewhere I thought the differentiation was important.

All About Eve fits the description in bold - it is not a chick flick.
Girl Interrupted fits the description in bold - it is not a chick flick.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind fits the description in bold - it is not a chick flick
The Help fits the description in bold - it is not a chick flick.

A chick flick is a light fluffy film where nothing too bad ever happens and lots of so-called comedy is involved: think Legally Blonde, Bridget Jones or Love Actually. Not all films written for women fall into that category and thankfully there are plenty of them out there which are intelligent, well written and thought-provoking and to label all these films under one umbrella when there is a wealth of genre's they should fall into is lazy imo

yes you're right chick flick means something different to everyone and it's all dependent on whether or not they're willing to apply any thought to it

btw, I know you don't hate women clock hence the edit :) Unfortunately there are still a lot of men who do and just because you can't see it doesn't make it true. Unfortunately I have experienced it both personally and professionally.
 
aye. obviously mabee its just the use of chick flick that changes... i suppose for me its just a women oriented movie about something that is mainly just there to apeal to women... hence a chicks flick :). i suppose the main argument for actions aimed towards men is very similar ie the ones with just stupid action and no story like crank :p .

but meh. back to the movies my last was. battleship.... 8/10 thought it was great.... massivly over american and the hero has to do everything himself. and loads of action for a relitivly small total plot (nothing really happens outside the bubble :-0 ) but still i was in a action mood and there was loads of it.
 
I thought the same about bridesmaids it was good but i expected funnier. 6/10

The dictator, expected hilarious got mildy funny 4/10
 
It's not a film but rules are there to be broken :laugh: Got a loan of Tenko and watched 7 episodes this evening. I've seen it before but it's still very compelling although not nearly as harsh as I remember. 8/10
 
Tonight's film was The A-Team.

I expected nothing and was pleasantly surprised. There was a plot, unbelievable stunts and lots of explosions which was pretty much all that I wanted. Liam Neeson did a damn good job as Hannibal however I would've liked a bit less of Face and more of Murdock but that's down to personal preference. I've always been drawn to the crazy :D

I watched it on a Saturday afternoon and it fitted right in. For that alone I give it 8/10
