Hi all, yet ANOTHER problem with my Fiat.

On my way home from work earlier and approached a roundabout. I braked as normal and heard a metal clanging sound. I didn't think anything of as I came to a complete stop. My path was clear so I proceeded to turn right when all of a sudden, there was a tremendous amount of understeer. It was as though the car just did not want to turn at all and was sliding on ice. I carried on, thinking what the hell was that and it happened at the next round about.

I proceeded with extreme caution and began to realise it only happened when turning right. Turning left was normal, but right turns had to be taken very slowly otherwise the car would not turn enough.

The roads were damp (but they were soaked on the way to work and it didn't happen then). There is still a good amount of tread left on all of the tyres and they are around 17 months old.

Please bear in mind, it is only a 1.2 Active, so I am not thrashing it around. I never go above the speed limit and do a paltry 60 on the motorway.

hi,
I have my suspicions..,

grab hold of a front wheel,
at 3 and 9 o'clock positions push /pull - as if the wheel is steering( turning)

watch the steering wheel through the windscreen,
there shouldn't be ANY free play between the road wheel movingand the steering wheel

now do the same with the other front wheel, notice any difference..??

( I suspect one of your track-rod ends = connect steering RACK to Wheel HUB has failed..)

IF you find fault here DO NOT Drive the car..!!

Thanks for the reply Charlie.

Just tested it as you mentioned and the result can be seen in this video. The first part is on the driver's side and the next part is the passenger's side. Quite a bit of play there it appears (although the steering lock is off [another problem]).

However, I just did the same test on a 2012 Corsa I have and that also moves however it is such a small amount.

Charlie, by free play, I am referring to the fact that the steering/wheels can move when pushed, surely not a good sign.

I will have to check tomorrow with regards to the picture, hopefully that will turn something up.

it should move SMOOTHLY, even with the engine off,

try again and try and see if there is a little bit of "space" to move the road wheels without the steering wheel moving..,

also worth giving the rear wheels a tug around too,

your description of driving it - certainly makes it sound as if you've got something failed / loose,

where is the car based..??,

I'm based just north of Manchester, Charlie.

I will try again later today and see if there is any movement and try the rears also.
