Hi,

This is my first post on this forum. I'm hoping that one of the experts on here could help out with a pretty straight forward query....

I have a 53 plate Punto 1.2 Active Petrol. Car generally runs well but out of the blue yesterday, the car cut out. Engine just stopped. I pulled over, started the car first time and off again. This hasn't happened again since. A couple of years ago a similar issue cropped up and it turned out to be a corrupted earth. I'm sure it was in the engine bay somewhere???!?

Before I get the car off to the garage for a check, I'd like to check this out for myself, just to make sure it looks ok and hasn't corroded again. Could anyone tell me what I'm looking for and where it might be? I've had a quick look but can't locate it anywhere under the bonnet. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Main earths run from battery negative to inner wing, top of gearbox to other inner wing. Undo, scrape clean, tighten up, cover with vaseline.

On some cars there will be extra earth to ECU or throttle body. All with a good scrape and clean and baby's bottom.

Looking isn't enough! Modern FIATs always have black for the earths.

Do the positive battery terminal while you're at it.

Other possible candidate is the TDC (aka crank, aka rev) sensor. While not starting will show no spark, no fuel, but while intermittent can be impossible to trouble shoot.

i would get another earth lead and run it from the gearbox/engine to the body
that lead to the top of the gearbox gets very suspect now on these old cars
fiat really should have earthed it to the injun anyway ,the cowboys

Great, thanks guys. I'll have a good look this weekend when I have some natural light to use.

Thanks again!
