Mrs has a 2002 02 Punto Sporting 1.2 16v Speedgear, i have just litterally 3 months spent a fortune rebuiding the engine for her after the headgasket went for a second time, it now is a brillinat engine

But now the box has gone... Going along in drive at 25mph last night just cruisning she didnt accelerate or anything but suddenly the revs bounced up to 4k from about 2k and it didnt speed up, so obviously soething slipped

I swapped over with her and it did the same to me, also if you boot it hard the revs flick round but it doesnt really go anywhere, in tiptronic it changes uop throught the gears on the display but im 80% sure it isnt changin up through them in actual fact as it doent feel like its changed up? also i came to a junction, stopped put it in neutral while waiting (as we always do) then came to set off so put it in D and went to set off but the revs went up and it didnt go anywhere so i stopped and tried again and it went this time?

The car has made a few squeek noises for a few months which i have thought is the box but not been able to figure out what, as ever with this car though it worried me and, yet again its let us down.

I have always been led to belive these are a rubber band gearbox in effect using 2 rubber belts to swap drive between gears, im gueesing this is what the squeeking was/is? also i have checked the gearbox oil level and its fine, i dont suppose its worth changing the oil and filter on the box to be on the safe side?

Replys asap please people

As Ziggy has said its an auto/semi auto so no real clutch to slip so to speak BUT im assuming the torque converter could do similar?

where is the main earth on these boxes? just im gonna be checking it in the dark tonight LOLOL

Cheers as always

Wayne

Ps already emailed the master LOL :worship:

Checking the earth in the dark wont do anything

I mean Take the earth Strap off (usually ontop of the gearbox underneath the battery tray (well it is on a manual) clean the surfaces up - clean the connection (ring or what ever it is) and refit tight - smuthered in loads of Copper grease

As the copper grease will shield it from the rain and rubbish till it wears off

Even if its the worst case scenario, (like slipping CVT belt) & if the box does need professional work, the Sporting Speedgear is a desirable car so worth having it done.

Hope the earth strap sorts it but still worth getting a speedgear pro to check it out and avoid any damage.

After reading the numerous other threads of broken boxes its alomost certainly the box, the squeeking has had me worried for months and the fact that while overtaking in tiptronic the other day and trying to change up at 4.5k and it decide it didnt want to and revved round to 6k and took a further two attempts to change up, saids it all really

And yeah it will be repaired, im not about to let her loose out on mega money, but the fact the head gasket went for the first time in march due to neglect by previous owner so i did that, then in June the suspension legs were all shagged, so i fitted new legs and spings, retainers and all new bolts all round, then in august exhaust went completely on every single box etc so i built her a Full Manifold back stainless custom system from scratch and then in october the headgasket went again so went to town and did all gaskets, tensioners, belts, water pump, the lot ALL GENUINE and then now this...

Gotta say this makes my old Clio Sport look reliable

rubber belts was on the old daff/volvo boxes, these newer boxes have 1 metal band.
was speedo working?

have you done the filter and fluid changes every 24k miles?

good news is the boxes have come down in price. often come up on ebay for less that 300, never used to see one under 500,

My HGT looked well looked-after but it was all cosmetic well cleand and polished but ignored servicing.

2001 & 67K I got cheap knowing the cam belt was old drove it home ordered the parts and like an idiot used it. The belt stripped its teeth and needed 8 exhaust valves head set gaskets etc etc plus the cam belt stuff.
Coolant was like slightly greasy water but no petrol smells or leaks
Stainless exhaust has been bodged on
Battery was probably the original with shorting plates now got a Bosch Silver
Right front brake began to jam on needed rebuilt caliper
Now the wheel bearing on same wheel is failing
Wipers arms fell of - now Wipex
Radiator sprung a leak which I bodged with radweld then replaced before winter
Ive also replaced all discs and pads though could have kept the rears but they were granching if not done up solid.

Its become a great car and apart from my cam belt goof still not "that" costly. I expect most consumable stuff to be worn out on older cars.

Thing is White Sei she paid about £2800 for it october 09, i met her in november 09 and been together since december 09 (it was actually doing a CV joint on this car was the first time i met her and introduced etc and got us talking LOL) and i bet between us weve spent £1k on it, its now worth £2400-£2500 once i have it mint bodyworkwise so its just lost all the money, buying a cheap one lik you say you can expect this stuff, but paying for a good one and getting this **** is uncalled for.

To add, she went work in it friday, got 4 miles into a 5.5 mile trip and came to a slight hill, it started its rev trick, in short, 30mph at start of hil at 2k, 15mph at top of hill at just over 4.5k.. thought it was gonna slow even more, is now no different on doing this in Drive OR tiptronic and again it did it where it wouldnt change up a gear in tiptronic on first atempt, BUT all gears are still selectable....

Selecting the gears is not the same as having the drive connect. The Speedgear does not really have separate gears. Its a continuously variable system but the Tiptronic makes it look like separate gears.

Stop using the car and get specialist attention before serious damage is done.

To add for nollegable ones amongst us, i had the car code read on new snap on code reading gear, it came back with "clutch check light" and "ABS ecu to gearbox connection" but shows no lights on dashbourd, the conclusion and suggested fix was the Torque converter BUT 2 gearbox companies disagree and say it is the gearbox gone becasue although its lost nearly all frontwards drive, it reverses fine????

ALSO i can get hold of an ELX speedgear 6 speed box from a neighbour, will this fit and work straight away?
