hi im the new man on the block

ive been offered a black year 2000 punto sporting with head gasket gone.

can anyone let me know what spec it will be,as the owner is clueless:)

will it be 16v? 6 speed? at this age.

will it be multi point injection etc.

i dont know how bad the gasket is,are they a nightmare, anything to look out for?

any info will be great, the car is only 100e (80stg pounds) and has nct (mot) for 6mth and taxed for 5mths

id only go for it if its high spec,as repair will cost.

just asking questions here because its 100miles from me.

thanks(y)

thanks for the responce.

ok looking good,as you say it will be 16v and 6 speed.

you mention just changing the head gasket on its own? do i not take head off and get it skimmed?

do the 16v suffer from cracks at all after been over heated?

il only go for the car if its exellent condition,as you say its old,and there is a bit of effort to get it driving again.

many thanks for the replys.

hi lads.

i made the 212mile trip today with my trailer.

got the car for 50e as seller wanted it gone,as she had spent 700e on it getting its nct (mot) 2mths ago!

smart looking car, exellent body work bar 2 marks on passanger wing.

4 new budget tyres, but new all the same, servived 3oomls ago,new pads and disks etc

2 owners from new,bit of a gem to be honest.

its a 1.2 16v 6speed as you all said it would be.

6mth road tax to boot.

i checked all levels before starting it,perfect clean oil, nice green fresh coolant.

no oil/coolant mix,no cream under oil cap,all looked good. i left rad cap just loose, started the car and woosh, she pumps water out exspansion tank.

i also noticed that it looks like the head was done recently enough, nice shine clean head, new gaskets etc.

so am i in trouble,is the oil being good and coolant being good,un-mixed a good thing? i know a water way has linked with 1 of the cyinders.

but it runs so smooth,no steam ot the exhaust??

i let it run up to temp, and i shut it off when it got to 3/4 the gauge, thermastat hadnt opened even at 3/4 temp,no fan,rad cold.

so looks like after head was done the stat went faulty and didnt open and it over heated!

so it is worth fixing,id like to use it myself, sadly fixing it for resale isnt a goer,as puntos have no real value over here, this car running with tax/mot is wort around 450/500euro.

il keep you all posted,be great if i had your thoughts on the gasket situation.

many thanks jason

hi flisko.

i was checking the hose that comes from the stat to the rad, standing with head in engine bay,it would be on the right.

sadly she is pushing water out the exspansion bottle,so the damage is done.

ive done it a few times on old bmw's ive had, when the gasket started to go,when a little warm i used to give all the head bolts a extra turn, and it did work,3 times out of 5(y)

seeing it is so slight at this moment would a nip on the bolts work?? then a magic bottle of steel seal (rad weld goo).

or is it head off and get it done right.

just worried of cracked head?? or the head has been skimmed a few times, and may not skim again??

as you can see im new to fiats,i own 3 cinq and 1 sei for the last 1yr with no problems.

looks like im collecting a free 2001 punto tommorow,1.2 8v, mot failer, bit ruff also, but free all the same.

although this sporting only cost me 50e,by the time i had it in drive way it now stands me 200e,petrol,renting trailer, lunch etc

keep all the suggestions coming

HG can go in 1 of 4 ways

Water to Piston / Piston to water - It'll either use water or create water pressure
Water loss - Steamy exhaust - Blowing coolant out tank / blow hose off

Water and Oil / Oil into water - Classic Mayo, Black coolant

Oil into Cylinder / Cylinder into oil - High Crankcase pressure - Blue smoke all the time - rapid oil loss etc

HG - All the above in 1 go

hi digger 58.

thanks for the offer of the tools,im in wexford,a bit of a trot away from you.

i could cover the postage of them both ways if that suited you.

im thinking of buying another engine, take the chance.

to do the gasket on this will be 250/300e euro, second hand engine or complete car 100/120e(y)

there is a punto hlx appeared on donedeal, lost keys, but still has a key to turn engine over. il go have a look, take rad cap off and crank it,see if she push's water.

looks a mint car, looked up the hlx has the 1.2 16v engine.

there is a running brava on adverts for 140e,and it also has speedline wheels on it:)

il see what happens,im not in a mad rush, but the nct/tax run away if i dont fix it soon.

thanks jason

hi ziggy 112.

yes i see what you mean with your list of problems.

i spent a hour on her today,clean oil,clean coolant.

put it is pushing water out rad cap,and she has now started to white smoke out exhaust(n)

no hot water going through rad,so i removed thermostat,it is stuck closed.even after boiling whater test,so stuck state has allowed it over heat and do in hg.

read the message above,my mad plan of getting another engine:D.

thanks jason

ok,so do i just remove head, clean things up and on with a new gasket??

no need to skin head etc?

use old bolts??

dont want it to work, and only last 2 weeks and im stranded on side of the road:(.

thanks jay

generally I'd say NO skimming shouldn't be necessary..
however;
you seem to think it's been apart recently.. and have NO IDEA how hard the former owner drove it whilst boiling dry..

generally you'd just check to see if it's still FLAT.. however there is a chance it's been "cooked" - effecting the metal.

we bought an old 1242cc (12 Valve), cheap from a trade sale.
I told the buyer to keep an eye on levels - as I could also see it had been apart..
a YEAR later they rang me to ask what the yellow picture of a radiator on dash meant.. = low coolant - .. OH, how do I top-it -up..??:bang:

choice is yours.. but for @20 quid I'd just have it apart and look.

Put it back together and see what happens , it won't break the bank. That HLX looks a nice car for the money, bet €100 would buy it. My daughter had one for 4 yrs, best and cheapest car she ever had, bought when it was 5 yrs old old for €1500, clutch was gone, had new clutch in boot, Did wiper linkage and a new battery as well and that was about it for her ownership.

ok lads,il take head off and have a look at it,and see what i can see.

il get a gasket and try just it after checking head for level.

dont know when il do it,but i will.

yes be great if i got hlx,bit of a shame to break it,but engine would be nice, and i could do with alloys for the punto i got free lastnight.

il keep you all posted.

thanks jason

When putting the head back on it's very important to make sure the threads in the block and on the bolts are clean, You can't torque a head properly if the threads are dirty, If needed run a tap down into the block and then blow them out, oil the bolts and leave them drain.
