General punto sporting 16v 6 speed??

great,thats all sound advice.

il keep you posted on all my work.

thanks jason

Shame you're not nearer Jason,

A mate of mine down the road is after selling his 1200 16v sporting 6 speed as the body has terminal tin work even though it's MOT'd until October!

Engine & box superb, 130K on it, belts & w/p done 20K ago.

Oh, and the exhaust has dropped off..... :)

Would've been an ideal donor for yours

hi,yes it would have been a good donor.

but sadly the cost of going over to your side of the water and collecting a donor car is to exspencive,id say to fly over, then fuel punto, and a frry back would cost me 350euro:eek:

ah il remove head and see what happens.

Do you want a loan of that timing tool set? I don't know postage but will find out, PM your address if so. Again nothing wrong with tippex or even cutting half the belt!

hi digger.

thanks for the offer, and i may take you up on it over the next few weeks.

just still toying with another engine idea.

theres a brava 1.2 16v on adverts in dublin for 100e driving;) so id get engine for sporting, ans it would give me alloys to go onto the punto i got for free.

just if i take the head off id want to do the full job, skim etc that means id have to strip head of cams/valves etc to get it machined.

weather bad these days also, and ive no shed/covered area to work.

il keep in touch,thanks jason

I'd be inclined to see what the other engine is like before stripping it, if it's not broke don't fix it etc!!! It may be good at very little cost. They are a pretty bullet proof engine as long as the timing belt is done.

my head is cracked! the punto one :)

right ive finaly removed the head on project punto sporting.

all looked good,as mentioned it had been done recently enough, new gasket etc.

i had a damed good look at block/gasket/head,all looked very good,if not perfect.

no tracking of the gasket,no marks on the heads face .

being a bmw fan for the last 20yrs,and still am,owning 5 at present,i did the cylinder head test.

i filled all the chambers up with methyolated spirits and put a sheet of glass over the heads machine face, waited 30min and saw that 1 had dropped down to around half way,10min later all gone.

i then got a lighter and put it lite up towards the thermostate area of the head, and a little woosh,it lit.

so the story is,i have a cracked head, and the meth's went through crack and into water way.

amazing how a small enough crack can cause so much havic with cooling system!

so im now looking for a good head or a complete engine(n)

all the engines and donor cars i was watching are now sold and gone.

any specialests i could get a good tested head from??

the car is just a bit of fun,but im keen to get it going.

the free punto hasnt missed a beat in 3weeks,and over 1200mls.

forgot to say,i also got a second opinion on the cracked head,a local machine shop pressure tested it for me,and they came up with the same damaged chamber.

the meth's trick was taught to me by a old bmw mechanic 20yrs ago, used it many times.

:)

yes il just have to keep a look out and see what i can find.

but most of the puntos over here are just 8v,16v sportings are rare enough over here in ireland

and when you do find them there well thrashed, over heated or cam belt gone:cry:

on a good note, the cylinder mores feel and look good, and oilways etc clean in the block, there was a new belt and water pump at last head gasket attempt, which i now have found out was done only around 200mls ago.

so id say the gasket was done and they hadnt picked up on the crack at that stage, and it just got worse.

thanks for all the input.

il be back as they say;)
