Technical Punto Jerking

Technical Punto Jerking

glad i've found this thread my car can be terrible sometimes especially as slow speeds in 2nd gear jerking away.

its a punto hgt 2004 and only done 8000 miles but there doesn't seem to be a definite cure yet (n) although it seems a common problem :bang:

My 8v does it (as ive posted before) Just lately i think im beginning to find a pattern, (either that or im thinking about it WAY to much)

Heres what ive found:

- It dosent jerk when the engine is warm, Its only when its cold and when warming up;

- It dosent tend to jerk when the petrol tank is full, as soon as the needle droped below half way it starts jerking form the next cold start

- Watching the dashboard when it happens i get no error lights, i just see the rev counter going up and down slightly in time with the jerking as if im tapping my foot on the throttle. At this point when its jerking if i dip the clutch the revs rise 1-200 rpm then fall to idle speed

So with this information in my mind it could either be to do with the idle control valve, or fuel pump/injectors or posssibly the ECU as it controls both of them.

As already said i think its a case f just having to live with it.

I think that the clutches are worn very fast, I've changed mine, put on a Valeo refurbished one, it was catching very low, allmost at the floor, but after 5k miles it got back to the midlle...
Now after 15k miles it started juddering the same way, when it's cold, dont know if this could be the same problem, clutch, or more preciselly the plate spring got thin on the feather ends cause thrust bearing is pushing it with a small surface? I think thats why punto clutches die fast...but juddering could be something else

How does your car idle? Have you cleaned throttle body recently? If it doesnt idle nicely, you should clean it. Take note that a few year old car cant idle perfectly :D

Well i have booked the car in at a local rolling road testing garage for next week, as they said your average diagnostic check dont always tell you what is wrong so will post back here if a problem as been found

Had this looked over they couldnt find whats cousing the problem,
this jerking only happens when i slightly touch the accelerator peddal
some days its worse and the odd time it has gone away(very really though) more noticable when engine cold Mmmm

Hi Freddo

There a couple of these threads running at the moment I raised one Lack of power.

Then another started Judering or something like that.

For me plugs\plug leads and aire filter did nothing.

As people have said here coil packs, lamda sensor etc the list goes on.

When my mechanic had the car for the night friday and I mentioned Id been putting a bit of water in regulary he said "Head gasket"

As the car is juddering when the engine is trying run\burn off the water

I'll find out for sure next week it goes in for some tests.

Let us now your outcome.... (y)

Same as mine Mdeko once car is warm its fine, it can judder , then I turn off and start again its fine all day long (y)

Thats why my mechanic thought fuel issue somewhere...

Aye this car is as tempramental as my Alfa 155 v6 I had many
years back (n)

Right, don't panic, a possible solution, not more problems(y)

I did post a thread on here with similar problem, but to recap

Changed my engine over, car idles lovely but judders in all gears and gets worse when the car warms up, driving is a pain in the bum. Changed over almost everything!!

Throttle body
Coil Packs
Plugs
Leads
Lambda
MAP sensor
Temp Sensor

Anyway, had enough and sent it to the local garage:bang:

Interesting call from mechanic today, told me he traced the fault back to the FUEL PUMP:worship:

Told me that it gives out correct PSI to start with, but gets steadily worse and gives out considerably less PSI than it should? I presume he has details of correct outputs.

He is 99% sure that this is the fault, though he has only tested at output (engine), and is going to test back at the pump in the morning to confirm.

I'll report back with update and if it solves the problem.

Only thing is I was quoted £229 +vat just for the pump:eek:

Fair play to the mechanic, told me to get online and try and get hold of a second hand one, which I did(y) I will hopefully get it by monday.

25 notes on ebay. Prices vary quite a bit, but can't go wrong at that price. If it turns out he's wrong, I've not broken the bank(y)

:worship:OH MY GOD I DO NOT BELIEVE IT:worship:

I have to say I was not convinced it was going to work, but it was the FUEL PUMP:slayer:

The change over was predictably not straight forward, and had a nightmare trying to get the retaining cover off of fuel pump, despite making the special tool (as advised in the haynes manual). In the end
gave up and asked the garage to fit my second hand pump:devil:

The car drives like an absolute dream!! Noticed it as soon as I pulled away, I am absolutly over the moon:D

I hope this helps some of you out(y)

Total cost, £20 diagnosis, £25 fuel pump, £44 fitting

I rulled the fuel pump out as the car was running fine at tick over! How wrong can you be, interesting fault. Really hope I'm gonna see some more success stories after this(y)

glad you're sorted mate, it's so frustrating....

Mine goes in Thursday to be diagnosed and hopefully fixed :)

Fingers crossed for a good result mate, hope you get it sorted(y)

Let us know how you get on:)

Have read through this entire thread (took some time) I'm having the same probs with kangeroo'ing first thing in the morning in 1st/2nd at low speeds but i've got a Mk1 16v 1997 punto. Just wondered if any of the suggested solutions would work on a Mk1, know bugger all about cars so dont know if there's much of a difference between Mk1's & Mk2's.

I get this juddering and jerking, but only when it is a damp morning. I do not get it if it is dry. What's going on?

I have a 54 mk2b and get the juddering. I used to think it was the ecu because the engine management light kept coming on but that theory seems to have been thrown out the window! For me it happens intermittantly and usually only if it hasn't been driven for half a day, used to think it was only after it rained but it happened at the weekend when I was melting from the sun. Level of the fuel tank doesn't seem to affect it as its happened straight after I've filled up as well.

spend 40 £80 and take it to fiat diagnose cheaper than buying loads of parts which I did....

yes folks I too have the juddering of death! Been getting worse for months and this week its been really bad - have to drive round the estate three times before I dare get to the junction and bypass. Ordered new sparks which arrived today - but last night my dad was messing around with the HT leads (just seeing how they come off in preperation for the new plugs) and this morning it was really good. Not sure if thats just because of the warm weather or if my dad did something?

Will see how I go - REALLY don't want to have to get rid of this car... :(
