hi all i have just bought my girlfriend a 1.2 punto 2001(y) it had head gasket problems that are all sorted now full service cleaned the throttle body but the tickover is still lumpy it does not seem to lose any power when driving no warning lights runnig on all 4 seems to be drinking abit too much fuel but tha could be my driving used to my hgt 155 it happens evry time i pull up at trffic light junctiond etc etc ticks over lovely for 2-5 secounds then starts idlling lumpy seems to be getting worse any ideas anyone thanks in advance for any help

Hi all, I too seem to have developed a lumpy engine, it has already had, wait for it---

new- plugs, leads, head gasket, thermostat, valve clearances done, clutch, gearbox bearings, diff bearings, exhaust, service, front discs and pads, and a HID conversion.

I have an erratic idle, not all the time, but under acceleration, it seems to be restricted on performance, whilst it is restricted it will eventually accelerate past this area, but when it is restricted it seems jerky, yet if you dip the clutch it will free rev OK. I suspect the coil/coils are breaking down? Does this seem common to anyone???

My way of getting rid of minor irritations

I would suggest try the following as its free and all simple work. clean the TB. sensors such as ICV, MAF, MAP, check air filter, CAM sensor and all other sensors while u there

Thats all needed is Carb Cleaner - do not use WD40 as its oil based

*Open bonnet
*remove keys - put them in your pocket
*disconnect battery
*remove a sesnor spray with carb cleaner, leave it 2-3 mins, whipe clean/dry
*refit that sensor you just removed
*repeat ^^^^ - remember do 1 at a time
*check / replace air filter
*replace fuel filter
*clean TB
*clean inlet manifold - no need to remove (i use card cleaner on a rag and whipe as much as i can)
*basically clean all items related to AIR & FUEL mixing
*AFTER YOU HAVE CLEANED ALL OR REPLACED
*reconnect battery
*take keys from u pocket - reason for this is below
*insert and turn key to position 2 - do not start
*leave keys on position 2 for approx 5 mins
*turn keys back to position 0
*now start the car

you may have a idle fault, but please NOTE, ****DO NOT*** rev the car please leave idle for approx 15-20 mins as because you remove the battery and keys from the key transponder it should of done a ECU clean / reset,,,,

once 15-20 mins have passed knock the car off, remove the keys allow approx 3 mins past then restart and hopfully the faults have gone...

Experiance - owned over 90 cars lol and this trick does wonderful things :-D

Hi All,

I too have lumpy idle on my 2000 punto mia 8v 1.2 and while sitting in traffic it feels like my seat is intermittantly vibrating?

I will try this method (As soon as rain stops ) and see if it helps.

Carrying on with my seat vibrating/lumpy idle, i do know that the backbox has a small hole in it.
Would this cause lumpy idle?

my car does this too, jumpy idle thats very noticeable in the car, have been told to replace plugs, leads and check injectors for dirt...might just get new ones

Very unlikely to be the injectors. And -- they're about £60 quid each!

Live ECU read might throw something up. Dry and wet compression test and/or vacuum test might, too.

Did vacuum test on mine today and although the needle was steady at 20hg it did fluctuate side to side slowly from 20hg down to 19hg and back to 20hg.
Any ideas? Not 100% sure what this reading is.

I too had a lumpy idle on my 1.2 8v, removed the throttle body for a clean and found the gasket underneath was not fully sealing, as I had a new gasket come with my head gasket kit, fitted this and cleaned throttle body, now a lot better, but waiting for my 2 shims to correct valve clearance and should be spot on.
