My HGT is **** from a standing start until it gets about 4000 revs. What mods can i do to give it some low down grunt?

Not a lot without spending big money! Is it a 147 or 155 HGT?

A forced cold air induction kit (BMC or Pipercross Viper) work well, but won't improve low end torque, you'll feel a difference from around 3,000rpm up.

A full stainless steel exhaust again won't do much until the revs rise about 3,000rpm.

You could replace the cams (c&b ones). I'm sure Nige or Tom can give you more info on these and where to get some from.
Then add a piggyback ecu to get the most from the other mods.
Should take the 147 engine (it's more tunable than the 155) up to around 175-185bhp.
Then if you don't wanna spend a couple of grand on a turbo or a supercharger then NOS is the next option.
50bhp jets should be safe.

Re: Re: PULLING POWER

has anyone had there hgt chipped cos i heard somone say once that all efi engines with more than one inlet valve per cylinder only use one unles you give it the beans ie push it over 4000 revs or in the case of my other car (BMW 523 Manual) stamp your foot down.

Some chips just remove the rev limiter however is it possible to keep using all valves all the time or from say 3000revs (is this called ecu remapping).

though i think it might **** lots of fuel away.

Re: Re: PULLING POWER

Hmmm
I can confirm that the cams and piggyback wont make a heck of an improvement in low end...perhaps a bit in the mid rpms, but what a difference after 4000 RPM ;)
Really not much to do to get low end power other than turbo i suppose...

was looking at a site the other day - i think it was gs engineering and it says that you can tune the twin cam engine anywhere from 180-300bhp. anyway arent cams expensive for the HGT? and where can i get them?

Re: Re: Re: PULLING POWER

Correct.

If you want low end power a HGT is NOT for you.

Re: Re: PULLING POWER

Yes cams are around £800. i believe!!

But if you've got the rocker cover off theres all the excuse you need to get it polished ;)
