Probs 1]High temp idling2]leaking into back seat

Hi Folks

Just wandered if i could get some opinions..have a T reg Brava which seems to have two seperate probs.
Prob 1} Have noticed after long journeys when the engine idles the temperature seems to rise very quickly [over half]. It then drops again when the car is put back into gear and starts moving again. I have felt inside the expansion tank when cool and it seems to have a slightly slimy deposit on the inside.
Prob 2]After washing the car the back seat seesm to be soaked. All the more strange as there is no leaks coming from the headliner just a very wet back seat..confused?!

Any advice on the above greatly appreciated..

prob 1 cud me thermostat.. Mine use to do that. Where about it the temp needle wen drivin?is your heater warm?i think the slimy stuff is condensation.. I think that wen ppl say head gasket has gone cuz you get that in bottle n engine is a load of bull myself. Prob 2 aint got a clue. Cud be rubber gone around boot.. Hope that helps

1. Do the fans kick in when the car temp goes over half ?
Do a coolant change - if the coolant is old.
What is the temp when driving ? Should be on the half mark.

2. Boot seal is leaking, or rear window seals, or sunroof if you have one. But my bet goes on the boot seal.

Thanks for all help..The fans dont seem to kick in when the temperature rises like this and the coolant seems quite clear(liquid in expansion tank has no colour), so I think Il change it and see if that makes a difference. I have noticed also that the temperature needle does swing about a bit under normal driving conditions ..so hoping this is a simple fix and starting with the coolant..Thanks again for all help..

When changing the coolant, check if the fans kick in.

Thanks yeh just done a coolant change the fan kicks in at the half way temp. The old coolant came out looking like sludge..may have been my prob all along .. thanks
