Problems with 2nd to 3rd gears

Hi all.
Yesterday I looked at a fiat ducato auto roller 2000 yr.
It looked great and comes with 12 months mot,plus it's only done 17000 miles and interior suits me perfectly.
He wanted £13000 but we met at £11800,which seems like a good price?
Only problem is gears were making a crunchy noise when using 2nd or 3rd and you have to slip it into neutral to change.
Does anyone please know the problem? What it will cost? Is it worth buying?
