Technical problems getting into reverse

hi everyone, im a noob here having just bought my first fiat, a 2000 1.6 petrol multipla.

all was going well until i tried to engage reverse, and nothing. it felt like possibly a gate in the gearbox was not opening, or reverse had moved. after a few attempts to get the gear, i opened the bonnet to take a look, slammed it shut and i could get the gear again!

it seems to be intermittent, i attempt to go into reverse quite often, as you do, and sometimes it goes in no problem at all (except for the grinding noise!) and other times no chance. it is either really easy to engage as it should be, or as i said earlier, it appers to have moved!

any suggestions would be most appreciated

can yopu engage reverse easy with the engine off, if you can it sounds clutch related

i can get into reverse if the engine is on or off, it seems to make no difference. Although, if i let the clutch out in first a little with the handbrake on, i can sometimes quickly floor the clutch and engage reverse if i an quick enough.

it seems a little better with the dryer weather also.
