Hello! I'm new here, and I needed your help, I've been crazy. I have a fiat panda 1.2 69HP 2012 upwards. When the car goes on the highway, reaches a certain speed (like 110km/h fixed) and goes into safe mode. I've been with the car to several workshops, I've already changed candles, candle cables, coils, filters, oils, and they can't figure out the error. What's strange is that he only does it on the highway, he doesn't do it on a daily basis. Has anyone already gone through the same process that can help me? Thank you!

Hi there, and welcome to the forum.

Do you know if the cambelt has been changed recently?

What you're describing here is typical of the symptoms of a mistimed engine, and it's extremely common after a belt change unless the correct procedure is followed exactly.

Thanks for reply.
It was changed a year ago. There are still a few good kms left to exchange for another.
I've seen that it could be the cranksteer or maf sensor

Hi, just joined. Saw your answer above and it sounds very like an issue I have with my 2016 Panda 1.2l Lounge.

We got the car not long ago, with 86k miles, and got the cam belt replaced straight away as it was overdue. Seemed OK, but we also get that occasional loss of power which then seems to get better by itself. Is this "safe mode"?

If it is due to the (non specialist) garage cocking up the fitting, what can we do to confirm this? And what is involved in putting it right? Is it essentially the same as replacing the belt (but without having to buy the parts kit)?

Get the fault codes read. If the engine has gone into safe mode, there should be a stored fault code.

Yes, but you may need to buy a new belt.

If the engine has been mistimed, the belt is supposed to be replaced; the tensioning procedure is designed to set the tension correctly only if the belt has not been used.

Are you planning to do this yourself, or to take it to another garage? If the latter, I'd suggest either a main dealer or Fiat specialist with a known good reputation - there are several reviewed in the garages section of this forum.

General purpose independent garages have a generally poor reputation on this forum for replacing belts without causing issues. The experience of others suggests that phoning round previously unknown-to-you places and taking the cheapest quote seems to be a good way to maximise the chances of things going awry.
