hey guys, just wondering if theres an alternative place to buy piston rings for a mk1 99 punto sporting engine? but if worst goes to worst how much money do fiat charge for a set, thanks sorry for asking but closest fiat place to me is quite far and thought i would ask before i went, cheers

I imagine Fiat would want £600-800 to do a set of rings. (pull head, skimming, head gasket set, drop sump, pull pistons/rods, replace rings, cost of parts, labour..)

Best bet is to try somewhere like Euro Car Parts:

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/Car-Parts

If you're near me, I can possibly replace them without pulling the head, at a greatly reduced cost. PM me for details if so. :)

I was going to say. You don't need to lift the head to do the piston rings, just drop the lot out the bottom. Still a big job, probably hardly worth it on one of these engines, but much less than doing the top end too!

If you were to do the lot you'd spend probably as much as the car is worth. Dropping the bottom end is a far more sensible approach!

sorry i must have asked my question wrong (italian) :p i meant where can i buy piston rings as i can do the work myself :) thanks

Yeah, Moosey put up the link to ECP, though I've not heard of many people doing piston rings on these, they seem to outlast the rest of the engine.

I don't know if Fiat will supply them.

Maybe find a scrap engine and pull them out of that?

If you're in Italy, no idea. Call Fiat and ask how much, i can't imagine they can't/won't supply them.

Are you sure that the rings need changing? Have you checked the cylinders for ovality or done a leak-down test & compression test?

Shop4Parts get their stuff from Italy so they should be able to help, if they don not normally stock the parts they will be able to get them. But surely parts from Fiat in Italy should be much lower costs than Fiat in UK.

Don't think the op is IN Italy, just he is Italian! The flag on his side bar say he's in the UK anyway!

thanks for all your replies, yeah i am in uk atm lol, and havnt stripped down to rings yet just was told engine was losing 1 litre of oil per fortnight so instantly predicted worst which is rings, dunno if could be oil stem seals? head gasket is definatly gone.

Where in the UK are you? I use Middlesex Rebore in Mill Hill, NW London and they can supply any engine parts, they're extremely good.

If the headgasket is blown it could be leaking oil from an oil passage into a cylinder, burning the oil. You'd have to check the cylinders for ovality when you pull the head. If it's losing a litre every two weeks it should be blowing smoke like crazy. I don't think you lose that much through valve stem seals without engulfing the entire vicinity on start-up.

Depends a lot on the miles. 1 litre per week when the car is doing a few miles a day is a bit of a different concept to a car that does hundreds of miles a day losing a litre a week.

If the hg is known bad, than you'll be having the head off anyway. I'd suspect that the hg is a far more likely cause of the oil loss than rings. If you check the bores for any scarring etc when you have the head off you should be able to tell if the rings are worn excessively.

I guess if you've got the head off anyway it's not that much more of a job to do the rings if they're suspect, but check everything else first!

sorry moosey but im in newcastle so too far to travel, yeah so i stripped the head and guess what? no scrapes or scratches, seems fine, hg was blown badly like will deffinatly need a skim. oil stem seals also gone, alot of burnt oil in cylinders aswell but cleaned straight off.

ps forgot to mention that the engine has done about 95,000 miles
