I also think the instant mpg figure is VERY accuate. So it should be really as it's accurately measuring fuel going in and mileage so a simple slide rule would do the job. The "miles to empty" is also accurate but only as good as the info going in. It seems to work it out using your present instant fuel consumption which is up and down and all over the place all the time.
(It gives up with "miles to empty" when you get very low on fuel as it doesn't want to get shouted at when you run out!)
I get about 6mpg when moving off in 1st and 96mpg in 5th on the over run average 43mpg
