alright so i really need to sort out an upgrade on the pc but not for a couple of weeks at least

anyway t'other day the pc screen wouldnt 'wake up'
pc was running and i could see activity on the led's
plus the monitor led was green(it goes orange on standby mode)
however it showed a black screen.

no other real issues on the pc bar an ongoing usb speed issue

on forced reboot it booted up fine with display however there was a sort of flickering on the display(faint) right up to the log in screen.
not visible on the desktop

ive now disabled any screensaver to see if thats an issue

pc runs xp pro
tft monitor with dvi input
radeon x1650 GF card

so is somthing dying?

EDIT: think i just saw a flicker on the desktop

Have you got an old GFX card lying about to see if it's GFX related?

hate to state the obvious, but have you checked the cable? a lot of people dont screw them in and when they work loose, they cause the same sort of thing. i'd also try wiggle the cable to make sure that doesnt cause the flicker due to a break, then try the monitor on another PC... best start with simple things before you start spending ;)

Possible mainboard failure (the 1 in the tft). It doesn't detect the signal to wake up from pressing a button or moving the mouse.Quite common on cheaper tfts about 18months old. We send back roughly 15 per week. If it is the monitor I can see if I have spares for it if you want to send me the make and model?

I hope it's something quick and easy for you to fix!(y)

right im back
been too busy to do owt.

anyway i now have a black screen on my PC
shows boot and windows loading screen then black.
on both analog(onboard)and DVI (GFX card)
monitor works on analog via the laptop feed

pc is now playing up as ive had to force reboot it a few times but the black display persists.
dead windows install?

Your using the graphics drivers when moving from the DOS screen to xp startup, could be drivers or the monitor doesn't want to display anything fancy, tried another monitor?

Grab a CRT of freecycle to rule out.

This is a comon occurance with TFT screens. Doing 2nd line support at a Univeristy, the majority of screen problem calls we get are TFT monitors not working on wake or boot.

Simply unplug from the mains and turn back on, it will turn it on but it wont fix the problem and it may happen again next month or in 10 minutes.

If that doesn't fix it we get em a new monitor.

well she's dead, now only flickers on for less than a second
so its new tft time

A mate has 2 24" dells and swears by them. Quite a few on the Fruit Machine Emulation forums swear by them too.

Thank the lord he doesn't swear by the PC's. :)
