Hey every,

iv just bought sum fusion 6 x 9's for my parcel shelf. Iv just looked at parcel shelf tho and theres a big dirty metal bar running underneath it. is this gunna make it a nuisance cutting it out or will i manage?

Thanks

i put in 6x9's into my mk2 last wk and i did have to cut away a large amount of the reinforcing bar but mine hasnt flopped down much and if it gets worse just use a piece of 2x1 wood and "woodstik" it on. i know it wont look too good but if you paint the wood den it wont be noticed much at all and it will do the job.

Its not that simple - the shelf back edge is curved. I will be screwing in some timber, but it has to be cut to fit.

Wood glue will just rip the surface off the panel its only posh cardboard.

That said the point of good speaker is to improve the ICE. But speakers need a solid mounting. Hardly any point having good speakers then just plonking them though cardboard. A proper plywood shelf is needed.

well i havent had any trouble with the mountings for my speakers.and yeh the woodstik wud take away the cloth but if he's gonna be selling the car den the new owner will want a solid shelf anyway so ders not really any reaosn to take it off

use the template you got for the speakers and place them on the shelf with them closer to the back window ..

use a black marker to draw the outline of the speaker
get a jigg saw and cut out the shape of the speaker

you should miss the matal bar with no problems ..

its not hard to do , just think about it

well i have thought bout it, n the metal car goes pretty mush down the centre so the speakers wont fit without cutting into it

The speakers on mine go straight through the reinforcing bar so the shelf bounced and rattled. I fixed it with a length of 20mm x 20mm softwood...

Cut the wood to length straight across the back underside of the shelf.
Get a large saucepan nd put in about 30mm of water and bring to the boil.
Place the centre of the wood across the pan and balance the lid on top.
Simmer for about 30 minutes.
The wood should now be pliable enough to bend it to fit the trough at the back of the shelf. If not, steam it for another 15 mins. Keep the water topped up.
Bends it carefully so it does not split.
Drill the shelf and screw the wood to the underside. Work fast so the wood doesn't cool too much and spring back straight.

Mine is now done and no more back shelf rattles. Just needs some 1/2 decent speaker wires.

The speakers on mine are 6 x 9.
The job was not done especially well but they could not be fitted without cutting through that stiffening bar. So I put that strip of steam bent wood under the back edge. No more rattles.
