I take the slam panel to mean the member which runs along the front of the engine bay, that the bonnet "slams" against (is that where the name comes from?) I think the whole "front panel" arrangement is plastic appart from the affore mentioned bumper reinforcement.

OMG, just read through my previous post's and I seem to have called the slam pannel about 10 different things

Hope the pic helps. Yes, Slam Pan is the bit arrowed that the bonnet 'slams' (lol) onto when closed, and normally runs from side to side along the front and holds the Radiator.

I think Slam Pan also refers to it being the first thing that get slammed when you hit something before the engine etc does. So it the whole thing in the mk3's plastic? What happens if you hit a tree, that plastic will just snap away and the engine will take the whole force of impact, and not disipate the energy through the crumple zones in the chasis legs

Some of it is done for pedestrian safety.

Personally I think if someone's thick enough to walk in front of a moving car.... :D

Yes, defo. I always say when that ad about the girl bing hit at 40 dies and 30 dosen't that she's got 100% chance of living if she didn't walk out infront of you, lol.

So the whole slam plan (even what the rad sit's on) is plastic then :(

Why, oh why, oh why are Fiat not rallying the 100HP when it would look so good with a bank of spots like that.
Takes me right back to Paddy Hopkirk and the rallying Minis of the sixties. Red is absolutely the right colour as well.
I'm sure they could engineer the 4x4 technology onto it as well. So much more fun to watch than all those chavvy Scoobies.

Think I'd probably just opt for the two, but that's exactly what I'm after. Still investigating mounting points, but as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, there's a lot of plastic :(

Incidentally, it appears I'm not the only one after spots....
