Hello.

This is my first post, made having looked at older ones and gotten some ideas, but not finding anything that matched my exact issue.

I have a Panda (55) - 1.3 TD MultiJet Sporting. Bought about 10 months ago as a private sale. 52K on the clock (MOT/service history from new), and came with a brand new MOT upon purchase (no notifications issued).

After having the car for about a month I got the seemingly common engine warning light issue, but found support on here by reading an older post regarding clogged-up turbo. After running one gear down/higher rev's than I would usually do for a good few miles on the motorway, I 'blew out all the muck' and have had no problems with exhaust smoke/engine warning light since! :slayer: Other than this, the car had previously given me no concerns/issues.

On to my current issue. A few weeks ago I started to notice a faint noise that I can only describe as 'clicking/tapping', from I believe to be under the drivers foot-well or possibly more central. The noise could be heard when i was driving at a constant speed and/or costing (out of gear/clutch down). The noise was regular (did not increase or decrease in speed depending on the speed I was driving). The noise also went away when I was accelerating or breaking.

At first the noise could only be heard when I was driving at low speeds (10-25mph), but has now got louder, and can now be heard at all speeds (even when driving on the motorway/70mph). The conditions for the noise have not changed (driving and/or coasting out of gear, at a constant speed; going away while accelerating or breaking). But the 'clicking/tapping' noise is considerably louder than it used to be, and I believe that I can feel it when putting my foot onto the foot-well (although that could just be my imagination).

I have gotten my girlfriend to stand outside as I passed, and she claims that the noise cannot be heard from outside (but this cannot account for the possibility of it being noticeable from the outside at higher speeds/the noise being more noticeable when 'sealed' from outside noise when sat in the car).

Looking at other posts, I have gotten the idea that it could be due to several issues; wheel bearings, break calipers sticking, suspension, etc... But the other posts I have seen explain that the noise speeds-up with the car (as would be expected if the issue was with a moving part), and/or is noticeable when accelerating and/or breaking (which is not the case with this issue).

I do not have much technical experience with cars other than changing a few tires and break pads on previous cars (I have been quite lucky to have only had small, easily fixed, wear-and-tear issues on previous cars owned; Toyota Paseo and Kia Picanto).

If anyone has any insight into what may be the root cause of such symptoms, please advise.

Thanx!

Thanx for the reply.

As the noise only occurs when I am driving at a constant speed, and I only put the full lock on to do three-point turn and/or park in tight spaces; I have never noticed the sound in such instances.

In regards to steering, if i am going around a corner (thus turning the wheel), the clicking continues as normal (given that the conditions for this symptom is met; driving and/or coasting at a constant speed, going away when accelerating or breaking).

I'm not sure that its an issue with steering, more I feel it may be related to the area around the front drivers side wheel. But as I said, I have little to no experience with such technical issues, and have no idea what moving part would produce a sound of regular frequency irrelevant of the cars speed.

Cheers!

It could be a drop-link? I had similar clicking noise in Ford Mondeo, it turned out that the bolt/nut of drop-link was damaged/slightly loose. It might be not related but worth a mention. :)

Thanx for responding.

I have put fill lock on and had a look at the CV joints, which look to be in good repair (based on googled images of good/bad ones). Also, no noise when putting full lock on with car at a stand-still.

I will need to research regarding the drop-link some more to get a better understanding, and have a proper look when I can get the car up properly, to get under it.

Furthermore, jacking it up and having a wiggle of the wheel shows no signs of play. Also the wheel spins as I would expect for a front wheel.

Id try raising the wheel,

(chock rear wheel's for safety,)

and spin the wheel, and see if you can hear where ticking noise is coming from,

i'd doubt it be a drop link, that wouid be more noticable on rough /uneven roads,

First thing I tried mate (before even looking online). Sorry I forgot to mention in my original post; with the wheel jacked, I cannot get the noise (no matter how fast I spin the wheel). So only does it when driving and/or has weight on it.

Sorted!

OK... So I have managed to sort the problem. I think.

I completely jacket the front end of the car up, and proceeded to take off both front wheels, then the breaks, then the wheel bearings. Looking to see if anything looked untoward as I did.

Everything looked fine (to my untrained eye), so I cleaned everything up before putting it back together, and also made sure that everything was nice and tight (including the drop-link bolts. With the intention of giving-up and taking the car into the garage, for it to be looked at properly.

Upon driving the car... The noise was gone! I have done a few hundred miles since then and still no issue. This seems strange to me, as the moving parts I have removed, cleaned and put back should not really account for the constant speed of the noise I was hearing, and everything I 'tightened' already seemed fine already.

So the root cause of my issue is still a mystery to me (I'm hopeful that it was simply a combination of a build-up of muck, and a few parts in need of tightening/adjusting. Which my removal, cleaning and replacement solved). I am content that, for now, the noise is gone and all seems fine in that area of the car.

Cheers for the replies/attempt to help with my issue (thanks given as appropriate)!
