Hello all !

this is my first thread here as I am looking for some advice
I have a 1.1 liter 2011 Fiat Panda MK3 (type 169) and i have been having some overheating problems

Some Backstory: The engine only ever overheats when in stand still traffic or driving below 10km per hour. It has happened a few times however i would always turn around from the traffic to try get more air into the engine and blast the heater on full to try get some hot air out of the engine bay

This time however, She get the hottest i have ever seen. I was on the motorway when i hit a massive traffic jam and had to stop, i was expecting her to overheat and she did, usually however she would not go past the 3/4 point, but she went straight into the red. I pulled into the hard shoulder and checked the engine. I noticed the fan was running and then i switched her off. Left her for about 10 mins to cool down before topping up her coolant and the little bit of coolant that did fall out of the reservoir was Blood red and seemed to have bits in it.

After i got home i gave her a little inspection, the pipe closest to the reservoir was fine, however the furthest pipe, leading from the radiator was crunchy when squeezed, almost like there was something inside of it.

I'm not really sure what to do but i have a feeling it could be either A: Blocked hose ( crunchy one ) OR B: a wonky thermostat

Either way whatever it turns out to be i plan to do a full coolant flush to get all the nasty coolant out of the engine and in the meantime i will keep a 5L bottle of coolant in my boot just incase

Would love to hear from any of you if you think you have some ideas of what it might be or have had similar problems

Thanks !

If temperature rises at idle, but the temperature drops again if you raise the revs to over 2k rpm even if the cars not moving, you have a circulation problem

Air in system
Low coolant
Blockage
Head gasket

Are the heaters nice and hot, do they stay hot at idle

Once the engine has warmed up the heaters do stay pretty warm, however if I have them full blast for like 15mins they do slowly get colder

If the fans on max it will cool the engine, this is normal, fans on 2, blowing just in your face, should be uncomfortable to put your finger inside the vent

Are they still blowing hot when the temperature is rising

If it's not red hot with the fans on 2

It's likely the heater matrix is blocked, not common on the fiat but we had one in the last month os so let me see if I can find the thread
The fans on my car are really weird, no matter if its hot or cold, when the fan speed is on 1 and 2, nothing comes out, 3 and 4 act normal though

nothing comes out, no heat or fan not spinning

Nothing comes out, when its on 0 and im moving, air comes in however when it's on 1 and 2 i have nothing

Sounds like two separate problems

The over heating is the most serious

With the engine reasonably cold

Before you remove the radiator/expansion cap

Shine a light at the side of the tank, does it rise if you remove the cap
