Not sure if this is helpful. But I had a similar problem, after having a fiddle I found the fuse had blown (the green maxi-fuse in the engine compartment fuse box), one of the other chaps that uses the car admitted he had driven through a very deep puddle which I guess must have shorted out the connector which hangs down quite low on my Punto.

but it comfirms the ECU is talking to the sensor
Since yes - it saying hang on no answer
it jumps into limp home

the fan cuts in a hey presto :) If the fan doesn't kick in you still have todo the process of finding out whats going on

but if it does - it saves time and means something else is at fault

Ok so I have just tried what you suggested ziggy, and even after about a minute the fan did not come on :(

Would you suggest still trying the other method of supplying 12v straight to the fan to check it definitely is the fan motor?
 
Ok guys I have found the cause of the problem, the fuse has blown!!

I guess I should have checked that first lol :eek:

Still seems weird that smoke would come from the fan motor just because the fuse has blown though :confused:

Anyway thank you all for the help :) it is greatly appreciated!

The smoking would have been what caused the fan to blow, was possibly jammed or had some water in it.

MIL should extinguish on its own after 3 clear runs (y)

that fuse popped for a reason
Sure a new fuse and it seems fine for now
But chances are it'll pop again

So keep an eye out on that temperature guage - espically in the traffic, if you notice the heat climbing - switch off - Dont risk heat stressing your head, and blowing the HG

Ok guys I have some more news on this matter

I changed the fuse today then took the car out and got it up to temperature, when i came home and let it idle until the fan should come on.

The temp gauge went over the normal position and the fan did not come on still, so i span it with my hand to check if it still span freely, and as I did so it came to life and started working. However when it was spinning I could see what looked like little sparks from inside the motor.

After it had cooled the car down it went off, and I left the car to start warming up again and see if it would come on by itself, but it didnt so I span it by hand again, except this time it didnt come on, it just produced more small sparks inside the motor (barely visible) and sounded like it was trying to draw more power from the engine. (the same sort of thing as when you have a big electrical load on in the car and it is pulsing at idle)

Now after this im fairly sure it has to be the fan motor, as the relay and switch must have been working ok for the fan to operate with a little help from me.

What do you guys think? :)

All i can say is - thank **** it didnt spin up as you were about to spin it

NEVER EVER put your finger near that fan, as it can kick in at any time - and you forwell may end up with stumpy handys

Thats the H+S bit out the way

The helpful bit, Since it started working once you spun it up, it indicates to me that the fan has a ""flat spot"" where a motor wears down, it isn't able to spark up and allow the fan to spin, it happens with motors as they age.
Now correct me if im wrong, but i dont think these fans are servicable items, so its a case of replace

the fact it seems to "lack coming on" and needs a hand, it says to me try a scrappy fan, test before purchase

Its 4x bolts and 1x connector replace, and about 1hr at the very very max

The other thing is the relay could also be at fault, so while at the scrappy it maybe worthwhile pinching the fan relay too! cheap as chips relays anyway :)

yeah after i tried that i thought it probably wasnt the best idea :cry:

i bought a new fan and motor online about an hour ago lol should have thought to test one from the scrappy first :bang:

also i have heard about the relay in regards to the cooling fan but im unsure as to what it does? and what it looks like? are they easy to change if it needed changing?
 
Hi there i had the same problem with my cooling fan and had to change it, be aware there are different sizes of radiators and the fan coul so if you replace the fan and could make sure it is the correct one. my friend.
 
Hi again all some advice please.
My punto 1200 8valve is being a pain having read some of the advice on here i want to ask more please.
It is overheating and heater aint working so i have bled it many times and when i do i get steam from the heater bleed?? It does the usual throwing the water out the exspantion tank when running. I am not sure where the thermopstat is but assumed it was on the top hose which goes to the radiator. This hose feels empty when the exspation tankl is throwing water out.
Do you think it is the thermostat. ?? Having had nothing but problems with thjis car i think iot is cursed ha ha . any advice is appreciated

A relay is a small device that uses a Small electrical currents (such as a signal sent from the ECU, or even your stalks on the steering wheel) to turn on a high current circuit

So in your case
the ECU has read the temperature from the temp sensor, and it says right the coolant is too hot

the Ecu sens a small current down to the relay - which charges a little electro magnet, which pulls or pushs a switch from an open circuit (off) to a closed circuit (on)

Relay is in the engine bay fuse box
on the right hand side - its a small cube, from the top right (just below the right hand side of the maxi fuses) is a Black (Hi-beam relay) - then Red (your FAN RELAY) - then a black one again, which is the horn relay :)

its a pull and push fit, they may be tight from been sat and getting hot/cold with use

ahh i see, thanks for going into detail, so its just as easy to change a relay as it is to change a fuse then?

and would you recommend changing the fan relay in this case? i had a quick look online and couldnt find any to buy :(
