OT what type of file extension is .m4a?

as above, i`ve got music on my hard drive with this extension, but i cant play it windows media, any ideas where its from,
is for the ipods?

Good way to tell is create a new text document, rename it with a *.m4a extension...it should show you the icon of the program that will play it (in this case winamp), otherwise you can search the net to find a compatible program...

But you are right its Apple iPod music format...

theres a fai bit to convert!
about 2.5 gig!
I`ll download winamp and use that i think,
i`m in the proccess of collating music for teh carpc!

m4a is a mp4 format modified by Apple for use with quicktime/ipods and usually referred to as aac.

I like Winamp and it's easy to get a plugin to play them. Search www.winamp.com for an aac decoder or look at www.audiocoding.com and the aac section

Try downloading iTunes for windows, it will probably convert the files.
Newer tried my self (I'm on a mac) but if it's Apples it will convert it.
