OT - Transferring data from pc to Laptop Help

I got my new Laptop today and I want to transfer some music files from my PC to the Laptop...I've got a network cable but it just won't let me transfer, it doesn't connect and it says things like invalid IP Address or something, can anyone help me???

if you have a burner just slap them on a CD then take them of cd on the lappy. (thats a lazy way of doing it buy hey...)

Assuming both are running XP.
run the network set-up wizard on both pc's
Connect with the cross over/network cable.

disconnect both pc from the internet.
run virus scan on both to ensure they are clean.

then disable any virus scanner/firewalls (main cause of problems when networking) on both pc and try to connect the network.

It should connect ok without the firewalls running.

if it still gets the invaliid IP thing. Click on the control panel/network connections go to the support tab and click on the repair button, this will try to renew the IP.

When you have done, REMEMBER to start the virus scanner/firewall again.

OR burn them to a cd-rw and rip to laptop as said on previous posts. Then wipe CD-RW and start again.

Or use a USB memory stick

I have a crossover network cable!

I made both pc and laptop on the same workgroup and on the same ip address except for last digits one ends in 1 the other in 2, but still can't share documents, I've got too much files to burn onto disc so I have to persevere to get this working!

opened my network places but nothing there, slowly getting tired here!!

You have to enable file sharing.

Right click on either a specified folder or on the C drive, select sharing and put a tick in the "Share this folder on the network
