OT. Phone Upgrade & N95 Vs 8GB Successor and TomTom

Would appreciate peoples opinions.

Its time now to upgrade my phone, i currently have the original Nokia N95, which in my eyes looks better than the 8GB version as its a better colour (silver), has a camera lense cover on the rear and can accept an 8GB memory card anyway (also alot easier to user than carring a USB cable with you). Im just not interested in other brands.

I just can't see how the 8GB version is that much better than the original. So what it can multitask, not bothered about that. It can have 7 shortcuts on the screen, again not bothered about that. GPS in both N95's are not brilliant therefore i'll stick with my bluetooth gps receivers, i can't see this phone winning me over.

Can anyone explain whats so good about it compared to the original.

I dont know whether to keep my old one and sell on the 8GB version.

I've also read that the 8GB wont allow you to install your own apps, this to me sounds like bull. If thats true, how do you get TomTom to work then? Those with the 8GB version do you have access to the root folder?

The only thing i can see is to upgrade and sell the phone on if theres no big advantage over the older one. I've read all the reviews and they state its a excellent successor but in what way, nobody says. Theres a 8min youtube vid on ebay talking about the looks but hows it better?

Can you change the rear camera with one from the original N95? :)

OR

Do i wait for the N96 with Digital TV? But i'm assuming you'd need to subscribe to a service to use it?

you cant install any decent apps on any symbian phone now well s60v3 anyways. symbian signed have shut there doors to provideing devcerts. meaning unless you requested one before 8 weeks ago then you are shafted!. There are certain apps like rotateme and other stuff that you can get signed, but all the cracked apps that used to be able to sign yourself are no longer working. There is a way around it

read half way down. will explain what you need to get devcert :)

Also n95 8gb has more memory and is slightly faster..just depends on the firmware you have installed.

ive got the N95 8GB and its a great phone for what i need it for. never owned the original 95 but when i compare it to my mates, the new one seems better built and easier to use. Mine hasn't crashed yet (the old ones do have a habbit) but if your upgrading the memory that problem may not be an issue as i hear it's all to do with the memory.

Personal preference i guess

I too had a similar quandry last month. I needed to upgrade my N73 and I wanted the N95 8GB. However, once I saw it's spec, I wasn't so keen. Sacrificing replaceable memory for a hard wired, non upgradeable 8GB is not a good thing, IMHO. Sure, it's black and sexy, it's screen is 0.2" bigger and there are other minor cosmetic changes but nothing to get steamed up about.

Funnily enough, Orange weren't supplying the 8GB version but offered me the N95-1 Classic with 8GB MicroSD card for free so I snapped their hands off. Once I got it, I stripped off the crippling Orange firmware and uploaded the generic v20 FW which gives you the on-demand paging that is the only desirable thing in the 8GB version and I'm chuffed to bits, especially as a 16gb MicroSD card is just around the corner :)

I've not heard anything about not being able to install your own apps. I'm sure that would have been a big issue. Ask the guys at All About Symbian.

I contemplated getting the N96 but there is no firm date of release (3rd Q 2008 by all accounts) and it would involve a premium I'm sure, which I can't afford right now. I think the DVB receiver will pick up freeview so I doubt there will be a subscription charge, unless you want premium channels.

If I were you, I'd wait for the N96.

Ade,

Do you know of a simple way to get "rotateme" signed ?

I'm getting hacked off with waiting and the developer isn't exactly hurrying !! Bloody French ;) LOL

And as for apps, I've got loads on mine !

i have the n95 classic -got on first day of launch last year. just recently had repalcement under warranty- they sent me new one with new imei, was well and truly gutted. over 12months of programs now no good because of the devcert situation. anyways i have just upgraded to firmware v21. and it is a cracker. so fast flying thru the screens. you have widgets that work now. maps2 and loads of other features. had to mess about with phoenix to get installed as not officially available yet :)

Ade

Ah but does it store the album art without needing the original images stored on the phone ?? That's been my only issue so far :)

Can't be arsed with Phoenix. I'll wait till every other bugger has road tested it for me first ;)

not too sure mate.never really had a look, will try later

Rotateme is on the list of signings aloud. think you just need to register at symbian signed- with no free email addresses. then you can upload your cert to them to sign, they will then send it back to you and you can use it then.

try here Rob, very good site and full of helpful info :)

using that in conjunction with a prog called Diego
- it can be used to modify and test any functions on the phone and flash or rescue broken phones

I use nokias software updater and nemesis to flash any phones and load different languages.

However i am more than certain i have used phoenix along time ago on my first N95. Im not sure what problems you've been having.

version 21 firmware was available since novemember last year ,but you cannot flash it with nokia updater or nemesis because they allow you to flash with certain product codes. v21 firmware was not assigned to a product code. with phoenix -you can flash it regardless of product or not. but to you have to use new phoenix. any it hasnt been cracked properly. you have to patch and unisntall drivers and install different ones..absolute ball ache. but its done now and it works a treat :)

wifi- grabs onto whatever is in the area mate. i have wifi running in my house.so not problem for me.but you can walk down street and jump on someones connection if they haven't secured it..but i wouldnt recommned it unless you wanna face trouble with law or the resident? lol

I would go for the n95 8gb if u could stick a mem card in. but you cant..and 8gb is easy to fill up.

Ade

thats what the guy at CPWH said plus he got me 900mins for £35 a month with 6month free insurance instead of the 500mins i was getting with the new n95
