Was thinking of a treat for myself and was attracted to the BMW 316i on maybe a P or R plate.Anyone know how expensive a BMW is to run/service/maintain..?

Pete

as long as they're maintained well they're not too bad but once you need to start to replace things they can be expensive. so keep it well lookked after and you should be fine

firstly, i've been looking at treating myself as well, drive my dad's BM a lot and it's a dream to drive, fast, comfy, classy, hugs the road etc.

first thing i'd say to you is don't get a 316 - go for a 323i! you won't regret it!

as for running costs, the 3 series from that time is a well built car, the engines and gearboxes generally go forever (a very long time) obviously - do all of the usual checks.

as for servicing, BM's servicing costs halve after 3 years - this is to encourage you to have it serviced with BM - keeps the cars on the road hence why you see so many older BM's with FBMWSH (Full BMW Service History)

i'm hoping to go and look at a couple i've seen over the next few weeks cos i'm ready for a bigger engine and a BM would be my ideal choice - have you seen any that you're interested in?

the parts are not expensive if you use euro car parts & place's like them, just make sure all the toys work. check the insurance as it will be high, my old E30 316 touring was group 13.

IIRC the mid 90's BMWs need a cambelt every 12 or 24k, its some stupidly low number.

The 316 is very SLOW.

If you are going to buy a BMW "Escort" or as they call them - the Free Series you will loose all your friends, other drivers will laugh at you and you will be the target of the image police. Apart from that - knock yourself out, get a 316..... just dont expect anyone to take you seriously in it!

tom when you say the 316 is slow how slow are you talking. I know this is a fiat website but I have just sold saint the yellow hlx and am considering a 316i compact. Cheers

Slower than my 1.6 sx.

Easy prey up hills, they then overtake going down the hill and get caught on the next uphill.

The 1998 316i is 103BHP.

And weighs in at a mighty 2 tonnes.

Whereas the Bravo is also 103hp and weighs in at just 1 tonne.

It's kinda like sticking Prince Nazeem in a ring with Mike Tyson.

Tyson would never get near Nazeem, but Tyson would never get knocked out.

Okay, bad analogy.

Nazeem might come out missing an ear though, or in this analogy should that be a door mirror?

ROFPML - you never said 316 "COMPACT" wahahahahahaha they are seriously **** cars. Even the new ones are woefull. We had a poor lad come to us a couple of weeks ago with a brand spanker, he was so upset as he had just had it delivered new and was horrified by it.

If you want a BMW, and lets face it what self respecting mediocre salesman wouldn't, at least get a 318 or 320 saloon and not your sisters version!

The compact really is the bastard child of a car accident and a shopping basket. My bro had one and he could never get the seating psition right, and he could never fit anyone in the back.

I drove the new 2.0 litre four cylinder on a track recently and it still stinks as an engine.

If you are going to pay for the prestige of the marque, then you have to get a six cylinder in a proper 50/50 weight distributed body.

What is wrong with the world? Suzuki Ignis and the BMW Compact - why post about them here??
