My 1.6 is even worse then a Honda VTEC engine. They say that VTEC engines need to be revved particulary hard and very close to the revlimit for some serious pull...mine is even worse...under 4500rpm there isnt really much but the best thing about it is that as soon as you touch the 4700 you get quite a good kick forward.

Pete, if your in a 20, 30 or 40 zone 4000 rpm is fine. Its all very circumstantial and down to personal preference really. In 2 years i've not hit the red line in any gear since i know that all i'm getting is extra, unneccesary wear and noise and no more power. If going that high makes you wince then don't bother - at the end of the day you should enjoy the car rather than drive to other peoples standards. :)
