What are you after? Performance or you prefer the looks?

Whats this OR thing about?

Get the Sedici and you get the performance AND the looks! Nothing worse than driving a chav-mobile which face it a Saxo is. Even if they were the best car in the world Wayne Rooney would own one.

If a Tipo is too big then get a Punto. Much better built than the Saxo and they're just so much classier.

I've had no problems part sourcing, must just be your Mk1 carb version?

You factored in change of insurance? That got to come out of the £2800?

I personally didn't like the Clio - felt so badly put together compared to the Fiats I've driven.

I'm not talking Engine bits, I'm talking Exterior seals and panels and head lamps etc, the stuff we all use.

Paying full price from Fiat is never fun.... and thats if Fiat can even find what I'm after, I had two orders cancelled cause they don't make them no more and was lucky to find a Tipo in a Scrap yard which had what I wanted as in my Area as soon as they come in they get Crushed the next day

In my opionion if you intend to keep the car then just get something you like. The only reason to spend lots on a motor with recent plates is if you plan on selling it in a couple years and don't want to lose out on what you spent.

The 2.0 Williams Clio goes for around 14G I think and does a 1/4mile in 16.1 seconds @~88mph

The 2.0 Tipo goes for around 1G and does a 1/4mile in 16.4 @~86mh

And personally I don't need Airbags as I never intend to use em. Id rather the Tipo, I've driven a 1.2 16v Clio, it was fun but it didn't stroke my nutsack like the Tipo.

The only Clio worth having is a Renaultsport Clio. Now the older 172 can be picked up for around £4-5k these days but thats still out of your price range.

saxo :yuck: to chav now, yes i like them but there more chavvy than novas now and there french, interiors are utter ****e, and build quality is worse than the punto mk1.

how about a remapped punto elx jtd?- 130-135ish bhp

or punto hgt

or punto gt- a real good 1999 mint one for your budget

my point exactly, he doesnt say he doesnt want one, just his not keen on how it looks, so i gave him a few versions to think about.

this is a fiat forum, he wants a saxo sized car and being a fiat forum im going to recommend a fiat, and the punto is the saxo equilivant

It may be a Fiat Forum but that doesn't mean every post must be a golden bezel of Fiat worship. My advice is get behind the wheel, have a good test drive and see what you think afterwards. The Saxo VTS (and VTR to a similar degree) are regarded as brilliant drivers' cars and their light weight coupled with pretty gutsy engines (especially in the VTS) means they can fly.

It is a shame a lot of them have crappy aftermarket lights, wheels, chromey bits though, but there will be some minters lurking around.

The Pug 106 Gti and Rallye are perhaps even a step above in terms of capabilities and driving enjoyment, well worth a look.

If it was me id try and find the mk1 Rallye 94-96 (1.3) i owned one.
its very light weight 826kg-good power to weight 123.
very little sound deadenin no electric toys to cut weight.
A wonder light weight full high revin engine 100hp@7200 [email protected] SCREAMS LIKE A INTEGRA.With the best close ratio gear box .
A true little go-kart that was good around town and pot holes.
White is the nices colour and stick with the white steel wheels they suit it better thn any afters and they weight less also DONT put bigger wheels on because ull ruin the best handlin small car of its age and after it.
Late 95 to 96 had transponder immobs rather than key pad.

The Mk2 Rallye 97-98 is the newer shape,heaver 865kg,softened alot,bigger engine (1.6)-nowt special 103hp@6200 97lb@3500 power to weight 121.
No close ratio gear box.

The 106 Gti 97-04 bro owned one and i got loads of times to drive it.
950kg,128 power to weight.
120hp@6600 (red line at 7200) 107lb@5200 a very livey engine like the mk1 rallye.close ratio gear box.
more sound deadenin and electric toys plus later ones had half leather.

If REALLY like drivin and dont mind no toys or a little less comfort and a little more attenion(in a good way) id go for the Mk1 rallye.
Both GTI and mk1 Rallye are very good go kart that can go sideways 90degress i joke u not (controlable) around round abouts easily.
If u like everything go for the GTI.

Saxos was twitcher and less forgiven hence why a lot got trashed in fields.
Because cit rans silly deals just to sell them a lot of people got stung and the may have missed a service or gone to dodgy places for servicin.or put cheap parts on.

If u get any that is older than say 8years old get the suspension bushes changed,and ull give ita new lease of life these are cheap to do and worth it.

beweary of the Gear boxes tho they are very good they aint the most durable to abuse.
If u get a Mk1 Rallye il say this now...B***** Can i have a go?
id be jealous.

My mum had a VTR, and if the gearbox is the same as the VTS then I totally agree with you. It was appalling

hmm agree about gearboxes. My friend had a 306 1.6 which i assume has the same gearbox, he got though 2 of them within 80,000 miles. Another chap I know with the same car got through 6 (!) within even less miles! If you want handling, get a Saxo, if you want straigh line performance, a Punto HGT, although the Punto is comfier and better built.

This might be the case now. I bought a VTR in 1997 for £10k and sold it for £7k 3.5 years later. No fiat can match that.

Cracking cars. 1st generation models are best.

I was looking at a VTS or 106 GTI before the coupe, I decided on the 106 in the end as it was that little bit rarer and in my opinion the better car. They both handle well and are fast for what they are. The build quality is shocking though, really minging velour interior and rattly horrible french plastics.
