Is it for real or what?! Went out yesterday it said 87 miles to empty. Drove 9 miles it said 43 miles to empty!!!! WTF?! Drove a further 10 miles it beeped warning and gave no range! I know they're not spot on but that's not even approximate!

Everybody elses the same?

Cheers

the range changes in relation to driving style periodically - and when the range gets below 30 it shows no range

All itailian cars have problem with petrol gauge,my gp 1.3mtj when i fill full tank and park the car downhill,it reads half of the tank, also my gillera motorcycle has same problem, but one guy told me that all italian have this ''problem''

Its not an Italian car problem, its an inherant difficulty in measuring acurately a liquid which is moving about inside a fuel tank. When the way a car is driven changes every few seconds

The range is worked out on your driving style/expected distance based on current fuel usage.

If you have got in the car and booted it along with 5 gallons of fuel in it, instant consumption reading in the computer on average 15mpg, you would expect the range to come up as about 50-60 miles remaining depending how conservative it is.

87 miles/3 = 29mpg (your current "average"), lets say due to "harsh" acceleration your average becomes around 15mpg, that gives your 43mile range, continue to drive in that style and then 10 miles later you drop down to 33 mile range (rough maths) so lets say it actually drops below 30 miles range meaning no more range indicated as stated above.

Range is its estimate, fuel gauge is a very good indicator of how empty the tank really is.

Precisely. Bear in mind that when the fuel warning light is on, you have 2 gallons/9litres left in the tank. This is what happens to my Mjet Sporting anyway.

Exactly so why have the range then? It's impossible to predict. I'll just never look at it again now. It's pointless.

Whats your Trip Distance A reading at?

I done a 500 mile round trip, and the range was very accurate, it was saying my range was 550 miles after I brimmed the tank. My Trip A was reading just over 1,500 miles.

Also didn’t realise the light comes on with 9 litres of fuel left in.

Because its a rough estimate of what you driving style is, if it says 50 miles left and you got that a trip that is 100 miles, you going to fill up the tank.

PS it also makes a fun game if your bored/poor and try to increase the range!

Better to stay-with-it to get a greater understanding of it.

It’s a prediction of the future based on your past performance. When you switch-on (cold) it may predict 87 miles - but that’s probably based on when you last switched-off (hot). Then it will re-calc to include the 9 miles travelled & again the 10 miles travelled. It can’t predict your driving style, whether you’re going 1K feet up (or down) the Rhondda, head (or tail) wind, etc – until it’s got some past data to work with.

Worthwhile running some trials with it. Particularly if you’re on diesel & prone to running low. It may predict you have sufficient fuel – but this can be quickly wiped-out if a DPF regen kicks-in.

Odd question this but it relates to the post, can a remap affect your on borad computer ?

Before i had mine mapped the mpg read out was always very accurate noramly 1 mgp either way at worst when i checked it. Bearing in mind i always fill the tank to the brim and zerso my trip distance so i can keep an eye on mpg.

Since the map my trip mpg has been very high for example last weekend i drove down the the south coast and back on a tank 470 miles in total my trip computer said i had done 57.8 mpg across that tank but when i filled the car up i got 46.5 litres of fuel in (i couldn't be bothered to fill up, and yes i do know it isn't good for your car to let the fuel get to low). When i worked out the mpg myself it had averaged 44.67 mpg. being out by 12 mpg seems a lot to me all this started to happen after the map.

Any body else had the same issue with there GP ?

Since my Angel remap mine reads between 5-7% out, for instance just refilled trip computer said 50.5, actual was 47.6mpg.

On that occasion mine was out by over 25% i am tempted to ring up where i had it mapped and see what they got to say about it.

I find the trip computer is very accurate in my t-jet. The range figure is always on the conservative side, the game is to see how far you can go after it says zero. You can then brim the tank to see how much further you can push it next time.

I'm going to stick with it but Jesus its tempremental. Yesterday I started up and went to the chippy. literally a 3mile round journey. start up and its on 88 to empty, drive to chippy and back to house its now on 58. Ok so as you say that could be as strted on cold original figure was from the night before. then after my chips and gravy I go to watch the rugby. ten miles there, few miles in the area and teb miles back. about 22 miles in total, range for the whole amount of time is still on 58, didn't go up or down. Odd computer, must be a female, very unpredictable!
