My 1.4 16V 2005 Punto has an oil leak. I think it is the cause of my clutch judder. If I hold the car on the hand brake and slip the clutch it seems to clean it enough for it to work fine for a short while before the juddering returns, which I think is caused by a coating of oil on the clutch.

The top of the engine is bone dry so the leak is definitely coming from the bottom. I took some pictures tonight and it also looks like it could be coming from the sump. If the sump was leaking could this get onto the clutch?

As you can see in the general pic the oil has spread all along the bottom of the gearbox as well, I've noticed the leak is getting worse as it now leaves a few drops of oil where I park at night.

Sump join wet with oil:

So is it the rear crankshaft seal or is the oil managing to get from the sump join to the clutch?

Assuming it's definitely not coming from higher up then it could well be rear crank seal. Is the engine actually loosing oil according to the dipstick? The other possibility is the input seal on the gearbox.

from those pics it looks too clean to be engine oil.. thinking you may have a crank leak or a shaft seal

especially if you are not loosing engine oil

I agree when I was under it and saw a drip and it did look clean but it doesn't smell like gearbox oil. The engine oil level is dropping but I wouldn't say by very much, maybe ~1/2 a litre ~3000/4000 miles. I'm planning on cleaning it up today and then going for a run and checking if I can see where it's coming from.

get a few cans of brake clean and a cheap dish brush and get cleaning the whole area off

Now the 1.4 16v is a rare engine when you consider the market is plagued with either 1.2 8v or 1.2 16v's

Very few HGTs - diesels and 1.4 petrols

Gearbox oil stinks rotten
Engine oil isn't soo bad

tbh though - its not clear to tell
A small sump leak will easily wash / blow off but allow muck yuck and grime to stick like hell

Mind you even a small gearbox leak would do the same

IF the clutch was becoming contaminated with oil, it slips and stinks as the oil overheats instead

the material doesn't let go of the oil, so it'd be slipping all the time

Clutch judder could also be a simple knackered clutch
If it was me - i'd just be ripping the box out and having a look anyway

So I cleaned all the oil off

I checked it the next day and it looked like there was a little bit of oil between the engine and gearbox, nothing was dripping out of the drain under the gearbox.

This is the top of the engine as you can see it is bone dry:

This is it tonight

Again it looks a bit damp around this join between the engine and gearbox, but underneath looks dry. I smelled the oil and it's definitely engine oil. The judder has actually been really good the last couple of days but I nipped out tonight after I got home from work and it was back again. :(
