Technical OBD Port is not working. Detailed guidance requested.

Dear friends,

This is regarding Fiat Palio 1.2 nv petrol Dec.2004 model.

To scan the Car data and checkup health of the machine, it is most essential to have an adapter. Referring different posts and contacting many experienced persons and taking their advices and guidance, I bought (1) 3-to-16 pin Converter and (2) 16 pin OBD Scan adapter (Bluetooth) – ELM 327 - and (3) Blutooth Dongle.

All pictures are embedded in the attached photograph with almost full and self-explanatory way.

The OBD port in my palio has 2-wires (Black at the center and White-red on right side). People say that the car has OBD II port. It has ECU of Magnetti Marelli IAW49F .D9 type. While connecting the adapter only the RED led gets ON. Scanning through/connecting through PC or Mobile, it does not give OBD (yellow led) or PC (green led) ON – means the communication is not getting established.

I have tried various softwares like (1)FiatecuScan, (2)MultiecuScan, (3)Torque, (4) OBDScan (5)Scanmaster, etc. but could not be succeeded through any of them.

I shell be obliged if you will throw some light on the captioned issue along with required guidance.

I once had the same problem, in the end I went to a Fiat dealer, who could read my 3 pin obd equiped ECU...

Hi,
my understanding is;

1, the 3 pin plug (OBD1) has no power supply.., you need to run an additional cable

2,ALL cars after 2002 - petrol
or 2004 Diesel + petrol

should have the modern OBD2 serial port - inside the cabin

which do you have..??

I'll post links from Marea / Brava sections regarding the 3 pin socket..

however - can you please confirm - before I link to confusing methods..,

The OBD port in my car is under the bonnet behind battery and below ECU.
I am attaching the picture for your ready reference.
In OBD port, there are TWO wires - One at the centre is Black (earth) and second on the right-hand side which is White-red functioning for data transmission.
As the OBDScan Adapter is 16-pin, a 3-pin to 16 pin converter is used between these two objects. This converter is supplied the power from battery by connecting it to + & - of the battery.
This connection is well illustrated in the picture in my initial post which you have replied.
Please guide further.
Secondly, how one can confirm that the given OBD Post is I-type or II-type? (i.e. how one can distinguish between OBD-I & OBD-II ports?)

It's Fiat own system, you won't be able to read it with the 3-16 connector.
See a dealer to have your ECU read....

For the older cars with 3 pin diagnostic interfaces you need a KL / Vagcom 409 USB lead and Multiecuscan < www.multiecusan.net > software running on a laptop. an old laptop rnning Windows XP is OK. The ELM 327 works with later cars.Try the unregistered "free" version first. A set like ebay item 171694967407 or 251603446444 should work OK, or just buy the KL /Vagcom lead if you already have the 3 pin adaptor You need to connect the red and black clips to a 12V supply and chassis. Don't use the software on the disk supplied with the interface, get the genuine copy from the Multiecuscan website. Even if the free version won't do all you want the 50 euro fee is normally cheaper than a single dealer diagnostic read.

Dear Friends,
I further tried to connect the Vehicle with the interface. Most of the massages/warnings means that there is no happening of communication between the car(i.e. 3-pin Port) and Interface (16 pin OBD Scan adapter (Bluetooth) – ELM 327). Usually through 3 to 16 pin converter, data get Input into the Interface (having 16 pin male socket). As the Input in the 3-pin connector is through 2-pins (wires) from Car's OBD port (Black and White-red wires). The 3rd pin in the 3-Pin connector is BLANK. Through this 3-to-16 Pin converter, the resultant becomes 16-Pin OBD port (which becomes the Input for Interface -OBD Scan Adapter b.t.) just like a Standard EOBD diagnostic socket that provide assess to on-board diagnostic system to monitor the engine, ecu, and other applicable parameters as per the vehicle design and specifications.
A standard 16 Pin OUT description is suppose to be as follow:

Pin 2 for J1850 Bus+
Pin 4 for Chassis Ground
Pin 5 for Signal ground
Pin 6 for CAN High (J-2284)
Pin 7 for ISO 9141-2 K Line and ISO/DIS 14230-4
Pin 10 for J1850 Bus
Pin 14 for CAN Low (J-2284)
Pin 15 for ISO 9141-2 L Line and ISO/DIS 14230-4
Pin 16 for Battery power

When Port of the car is connected to 3-Pin of Converter and 2-free Terminals are connected to the Battery, the 16-Pin OUT acquires connections in Pins 4&5 (Black wire of Car port & -ve of Battery), 7 (White-red wire of Car port), and 16 (+ve of Battery).

Now it becomes just like a Std. EOBD 16-pin OUT which is ready to acquire the connection from/with Interface (OBD Scan Adapter b.t.).

As I have said in the beginning that most of the massages/warnings means that there is no happening of communication between the car(i.e. 3-pin Port) and Interface (16 pin OBD Scan adapter (Bluetooth) – ELM 327), I doubt that Pin 7 th position may not be correct position for the White-red wire of the Car port ( If it is not of ISO 9141-2 K Line and ISO/DIS 14230-4 description type - THIS IS JUST MY GUESSING – I do not technically know!). As you are well aware that my car is Fiat Palio 1.2 nv petrol Dec.2004 model.It has ECU of Magnetti Marelli IAW49F .D9 type.

If you read my meassage #6 of this thread, you will see that I have already stated that an ELM-327 interface will not work on your car.
You need a KL / Vag-Com 409.1 to USB interface (and the 3 pin adaptor).

And you'll need A LOT of knowledge about what you're doing.
One wrongly connected power (+) wire f.i., and youre ECU is toast...

From my electronics knowledge it would be hard to damage the ECU by mis-connecting the red and black clips on the 3 pin adaptor. Firstly they do not connect to the ECU, just the interface. Secondly the K line interface is 12V and reverse polarity tolerant by design. There is a fair chance of damaging the interface, but they are cheap. There is also a slight chance of damaging the USB port on the laptop if you were powering it from a car adaptor. Then again you could drop it carrying it to the car.

Anything with a diode will be fried if you reverse polarity. This includes radios, AC units, locking mechanisms, Coils, Alternator/Generator, Starter motor and more importantly the ECU.

Please read my post, the red and black clip leads don't connect to the ECU. You obviously don't understand diodes and their use. A common application of diodes is to protect against damge from reversed polarity of supplies. Many automotive data buses also use diodes to protect againt spikes and reversals.

In fact they do....!
The 3 pin OBD is Fiat's own design, and by misconnecting a non original OBD reader or interface or whatever, the ECU will die.
Lot's of stories about the inexpensive ( Ebay..) 3 to 16 pin connector badly assembled , f.i. sometimes the red and black wires are reversed...
