re

so you can ping the ip address of bbc? but when you type the ip address, nothing else into address bar it doesn't load it? can you ping www.bbc.co.uk? or similiar?

does it have a built in firewall or anything?

is it a router and it gives you an ip address by dhcp? can you ping the router? try putting in DNS servers manually? at work we were given 194.72.9.34 and 194.72.9.38 as a pair to use by BT.

does she have any email setup in anythgin like outlook express or outlook? does that work?

Start > Run > services.msc [press enter] > Check if DNS Client is started.

:)

Question, why when pinging do most people ping bbc.co.uk?

Because bbc.co.uk never has servers that are down.

Microsoft are in the USA and Google is tempromental when it comes to DNS.

Rab >> What do the lights do on the Voyager? Ie. blink occassionally, stay solid green etc? :s

Ok the lights on the modem are Power ON
Dns ON and Data flashes about once every 10 seconds or so. (all green)
I've checked the DNS client is started and disabled it and re set it.
I can ping BBC and get the results back but if you type the address it fails.
I've had the line checked and it's come back as good, talking to the Broadband technical desk they've talked me through all the settings and i've run out of options.
I've asked for a new modem to be sent out and i'm told it'll be here on Thursday
Hopefully this will cure the fault?
It's confusing the hell out of me this one the modem shows it's connected but i can get no web pages at all????
Has anyone else come accross anything like this before? do you think a new modem will work?

Call the helpdesk and ask them for the DNS addresses so that you can enter them manually - they should give you two IP addresses.

You need to put these in the TCP/IP settings for DNS in the LAN Connection in the Network connections.

Right Click "My Network Places", Properties, Right Click "Local Area Connection", Properties, Scroll to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Click Properties

Leave the "obtain IP address automatically" selected, but change the "obtain DNS server address automatically" to "manual" and enter the addresses they give you.

This will test once and for all if its the router not handing out the DNS correctly.

HTH ;)

I'm going round on Thursday when the new modem apears so i'll give that a try then thanks.
It's driving me up the wall everything seems right but nothing i try works so far. :(

re

are you connected to this router by a cat5 cable? or is it a usb modem?

when you say you can ping bbc do you mean by using the ip address and by the written address?

if its cat5 i guess the router has its own ip address and dishes you out one by dhcp? can you put the ip address of the router into internet explorer and get a GUI?

This may sound ridiculous, but...

One night last week I came home from work and my little brother had the same problem on his PC.

He could ping, but get to no webpages at all.

After 30 minutes, I found that a proxy server was entered into the VPN/LAN settings under Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab > Lan Settings.

I know full well how a proxy server functions, however he's 10 years old and would never change the proxy server to a valid IP!

Just check that setting, out of interest Rab.

re

ah! i have actually had the same thing as Ian says at work where we don't use a proxy server and just the box was ticked to use one and nothgin entered!

try opening the run command bax and type in 'cmd'

then type in 'ipconfig /release'
then.. 'ipconfig /renew'

p.s ignore the inverted commas they are htere to highlight what to type in. Remember the spaces after ipconfig.

Also do a complete virus and spyware scan.
