Yesterday i took my car into stoneacre for a brake light replacement, i then picked the car up and went to drive it out the carpark. It wouldnt change up gear, automatic mode wasnt working!! I drove the car back and told them, they are now saying they didnt go anywhere near the gearbox and its just one of those things and i am liable for it! I said i dropped the car off with auto working and picked it up and its now broken, i didnt even get out the car park! Whos liable me or them and what should i do??

Tough call but its your word against theirs really. I cant see how a fix to brake lights would screw the gearbag up...

Good luck fella but dont hold your breath...

They changed the road springs too, but thats it. Whats all this about the brake light switch affecting automatic?? Auto changes down gear but not up. Any ammo for when i get back to stoneacre would be appreciated. Thanks

AAAAAHHHH!! apparently stoneacre dedicated 4 hours to the car with their MASTER TECH and even he couldnt find whats wrong with the car. So long story short i took a car with a broken bulb to stoneacre now ive got a car with no automatic mode and nobody knows whats wrong with it! Ive said im leaving the car there and not picking it up until its fixed but there not budging. They say they have to diagnose the car and open up a fiat tech folder with the big boys at fiat tech, surely they should do this for free as it broke when they was driving it. ANY ADVICE??

Just because it failed whilst they were driving it doesn't automatically make them culpable.

You'd have to prove their actions directly caused the problem (which admittedly would seem likely).

In law it's purely their word against yours which wont go very far without evidence :(

Although you wont but just for a minute see it from their side of the fence...

They dont know you, perhaps it was already like that & your trying to pull a fast one 'I'M NOT SAYING YOU ARE!' before you spit the dummy out but it does happen & it happens alot. Infact it happened to me yesterday but the owner was caught out when I spoke to another garage who were previously working on the car...he then cheekily asked what was wrong with it so he could fix it himself....yeah & i'll sign on the dole while your at it:rolleyes:

Anyway let the garage look into it, ask for a copy of printouts etc then the arguments can begin over whose paying after all you no doubt need your car for work? The master (DET) tech should of contacted Fiat for assistance long before 4 hours though as this would of cost the garage alot in lost labour time which who is paying for? A decent garage would look into it for the customer and come to a agreeable (but fair) solution.

Did you check the brake light switch under the brake pedal as recommended? This is the most likely culprit and where I'd concentrate my efforts...

As stated, give it a search on the forum... there's even a guide! (y)

Its not the brake light switch, they dont know what it is. They admit that the car has broken in their care but say that the work they carried out cant of affected the automatic mode! How can they say that when they dont even know whats wrong!! Ive been without my car for 4 days now but stoneacre arnt budging so im getting the legal forms out, nothing else i can do. My car went in fine came out with automatic not working, they admit its happened whilst they have had it and they wont even diagnose the problem!!! GUTTED!!

dude.. install a new break light switch!!! it only costs £4.50 (when it fails you cannot "see" that is the case by just looking at it) auto box will not shift up if it is being told you are stopping.. if that don't fix it you can then start getting legal advise

or you can ignore my advice.. but then why ask..

I get the feeling Josh doesnt want to hear the offers of help guys...

Hello, sorry im not ignoring you its just there telling me its not the brake light switch. Can i fit it myself? I would get stoneacre to do it but i would imagine they will brake something else! Cheers for all advice its just im a man on the edge!

The only thing I would say is if Josh changes the brake light witch and its not that causing the auto box problem, having done it himself, is there not a danger that Stoneacre will wash their hands of the whole episode?

Will say, as I have before, brake light switch has major influence on the Stilo... 1.6 Coil Pack on 2 & Brake Light Switch formed suicide pact and on JTD Supercharge Pressue Switch and Brake Light Switch more or less did likewise... don't get me wrong, from experience it does sound a feasible solution in Josh's case, just inclined to proceed cautiously.
