^^^Will try that tomorrow, thanks.

Pic for you. What's the little jar thing above the AC compressor?

Yeah, it's dark brown. Clutch feels fine though.

One final last question hopefully, sorry guys. When you open the boot with the remote should it lift up on it's own or just unlock?

Thanks for all your help. I was getting a bit worried when the car didn't seem to match the diagrams in the handbook but I feel better now. Time for a cup of tea before bed I think, cheers.

Ignore that, I was looking in the wrong place. It's the coolant tank that isn't there.
It is confusing as the drawing and pictures online are generic 1.1 and 1.2

some cars have a separate coolant expansion tank and some don't as it's been built into the side of the radiator

The vast majority of UK cars don't but there are a few odd exceptions

The cars with a separate coolant tank have a wider radiator than the early cars with the tank integral with the radiator.
Initially, cars with aircon had the wider radiator, with separate tank, as does my 2006 model. Later, diesels use this radiator too, with or without aircon.
Late 2006, I think, the separate tank was discontinued, but the diesel and aircon models got an integral tank, but with a wide radiator, non-aircon retained the narrower radiator.
To confuse this further, I think the last of the line all got the wider radiator, even without aircon.
Most aftermarket suppliers will show the width, so whatever is fitted, is probably correct, and for replacement, replace with whatever you've got already.
With all the right hoses, any setup could be used, but there's no benefit from an 'upgrade'. The separate tank does seem to make bleeding easier though.

Start the engine

Wind the window down a bit, so you can reach the inside to the door handle, just incase the doors accidentally locks, with the engine running

Put it in neutral, handbrake on

Walk round the back and put your palm over the exhaust

No leak the pressure will build up and push your hand off

Little leak pressure builds up, but you will hear the leak further upstream

Little or no pressure, large leak further upstream

Most exhausts are adequate, even third party

The Flexi joint at the front is a weak point, though
Yep, there's a leak. Sounds like it's pretty close to the back so hopefully a relatively cheap fix. Got it booked in next week for that and an engine diagnostic. It's a shame but I suppose you can't expect perfection for under a grand.

Re the aircon would you service it now or wait for spring?

If you do it yourself the exhaust rear was over £20 about 3 years ago when I did mine

It's fairly easy routing,

No idea how much a garage charges, but most will give a free quote

Here in Crewe select a tyre and F1 seem reliable, but kickfit try up selling unnecessary jobs and quote high but will match any local price

My garage in Wrexham is £35 fitted. I'm not really capable of big jobs myself, I'm sort of semi disabled.

I bought mine from Crewe. Do you know Budget Cars in Shavington?

It sounds more next to the back wheel.
That's a commom point of failure.

Unfortunately on a well rusted system, separating the backbox and centre pipe will be problematic, so you're likely to have to change the lot.

On a 15 yr old car I'd bought for a grand, I wouldn't bother at all.

I needed one for an MOT just over a year ago, and the cheapest, nastiest one I could find anywhere that had any stock on the shelf cost me almost £100, just to buy the backbox, and the centre pipe wasn't much less, so not much change out of £200 for a self fitted poor quality exhaust. Had to go to two separate factors and then another trip on the bus to return the backbox for exchange, since whoever welded on the rear hangers burned a hole right through the shell.

But the OEM one lasted 13 years and over 110k, so that kinda made up for it.

If you know you're going to need one and can find something half decent at a reasonable price, buy it while you can.

Found my old post

The cheap exhaust lasted well

Nope, I pass yellowston between shavington and Nantwich most weeks
It's on the other road, next to Baird Foods. Only a yard and a portacabin, nothing fancy.

Another question I've just remembered. Someone on the forum said there's a cup in the dashboard or somewhere that needs emptying to stop the windscreen misting up?

Next to the repair garage that's handy for them

Don't try and remove the cover the plastics clips don't age well and will break

Awesome vid, thanks. I found the two little plastic things and jiggled them slightly and about half a pint of water poured out! Blimey! How often will that need doing?

Great, thanks. Easy enough job to do once or twice a year.

I'm gonna leave the aircon for now, might see if I've got a bit of spare cash in the spring.

Once again, thanks for all the great help guys!
