Technical (newbie) Upgrading to Apple Carplay

Hi all, I just wanted to share a post I made on the Abarth Owners FB site about how I got CarPlay/Android Auto enabled on my 2017 Abarth 595 that came with the 5inch display. Hope it helps.

Anything you choose to do is at your own discretion, I cannot guarantee anything posted below will work, only that it did for me:

How to: Retrofit European 7" Uconnect Touchscreen Radio in 2016+ Abarth 595 WITH 5" Uconnect Touchscreen.
DISCLAIMER: This worked for my 2017 UK Abarth 595 Competizione and two other Abarths I know of BUT this does NOT guarantee it will work for you.
——
What you gain: Apple Carplay, Android Auto, Better and Larger Screen, OEM Navigation if you didn't have it before.
Parts:
Radio
----------
1) CONTINENTAL Fiat 312 7" vp2 EMEA DAB NAV
Make sure the back of the unit says the above exactly if you want NAV. If it doesn't say NAV then it is is NOT a NAV Unit. If it is a NAV unit make sure you get a GPS antenna with it if you don’t already have NAV. I bought a brand new unit off eBay German from supplier my500eu.
Get one that includes an unlock code. There are sites that claim to be able to supply the unlock code but when I compared them to my old unit and my new unit the numbers supplied were incorrect… You have been warned!
Trim and Vents

2) Fiat 500/ Abarth 595 Radio trim for Uconnect 7 (the 7inch has a different surround to the 5inch).
Possible part number:
Trim- 735620127
Vents- 735637831 and 735637832
Trim and radio removal example videos are available on YouTube
What you can expect to pay:
€450 for new headunit. €30 - €50 for trim piece.
Installation:
The radio is plug and play and uses the existing harness in the S4 Abarth 595s 2016 onwards.
If you are installing NAV and didn’t have it before you can attach the GPS antenna up behind the headunit in the dash. This will pick up a signal. If you didn’t have DAB before I don’t know where to obtain the correct wires and antenna for this at this time.
Use AlfaOBD or MultiECUScan or any dealer level diagnostics software to perform a proxi alignment. I used MultiECUScan and the instructions below are based on that software.
Tools for Proxi Alignment:
------------
1) Correct ELM cable (cheap ones don’t work well. I bought mine from Gendan, see link below)
2) OBD Adapters for Fiat/Alfa (specifically the yellow CAN bus adapter.)
3) MultiECUScan (MES) or Alfa OBD (I will used MES)
4) MES and cables can be obtained from gendan (Google search) You only need the yellow adapter for the majority of jobs on the Abarth.
5) There is a MES forum that may be able to help - just do a Google search.
Proxi Alignment Instructions
--------------------
Connect Fiat Modified USB to OBD2 ELM Interface to Laptop
Connect Yellow CAN Bus Adapter to ELM Interface
Start MultiECUScan. (make sure you are using the latest version --> 4.6R1 at time of this post
Properly configure interface in settings.
Go to FIAT 500 1.4 Turbo 16V TJet/Multiair Abarth -> Body -> CAN Setup / Proxi Alignment Procedure (models with Uconnect) -> Connect (F10)
Once connected at go to the Adjustment Tab
Press Control+Alt+C, this should open a Custom PROXI window. MAKE SURE TO GET A COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL PROXI. That way you can always go back to it should you mess things up. I would strongly recommend you keep a log of changes you make along the way as you can then go back and undo if needed.

So this is where things get a little complicated. For the Proxi Alignment to be successful with your new UConnect 7 you need 193 Hexidecimal places. I started out by adding "00" until I reached 193 hexadecimal spots. You will then need to change the following:
Byte 121= 40 Navi
Byte 121= 44 Navi+Audio
Byte 123= D5 Dab
Byte 130= 01 Fiat logo
Byte 130= 05 Abarth logo
Byte 148= 05 Uconnect 7
Carplay, Android:
Byte 157= 01 CarPlay
Byte 158= 00
Byte 159= 00
Byte 160= 01 Android Auto
Now Highlight PROXI ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE and hit "Execute." If successful it will go through all of the modules and produce a success message in MES.

Now... what do you do if you get the dreaded "Request out of Range" error when trying to proxi align the ETM.
A) Don't panic.
B) Immediately after the failed alignment click "disconnect" at the bottom of the Adjustments tab. Then click on the PDF Icon on the page with the "Proxi Alignment Procedure (models with Uconnect)" Option. This will produce a PDF file that at the bottom will tell you why the ETM failed to proxy align and what hex values are wrong. (Go back into your Custom PROXI window and change those values to what the PDF tells you to and hit "ok" and execute the proxy alignment again)

At this point I had a successful proxi alignment, uconnect was working BUT my odometer (mileage) was flashing. Through checking others Proxis I then changed Byte 38 to 10 and all is now working as it should with the exception of the Abarth telemetry pages. I haven’t worked these out just yet…

My Proxi Alignment Hexadecimal Dump:
33 32 31 35 30 30 31 39 39 35 31 4F 55 54 50 55 54 44 4A 49 54 20 16 07 07 4F 84 00 05 10 00 00 00 09 00 00 04 10 00 00 00 91 C2 75 06 FE 40 1C C0 80 00 00 26 00 01 00 94 06 01 01 00 40 00 02 20 75 40 0A 0C 0D 01 80 2E 24 00 00 00 00 31 02 51 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 05 00 94 08 52 00 04 88 07 00 20 80 00 00 44 00 B5 00 0F 00 00 00 80 05 00 C0 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 05 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Tried this and unfortunately didn't enable apple car play also byte 123 had to remain as 85 on mine, the quest continues but much appreciated.

Hey guys - sorry for bringing this old thread back up. Just picked up a 68 reg Abarth 595 and was gutted to find out it doesn’t have CarPlay, but does have the unconnect and OEM Nav.

Was really hoping it did have it as my wife’s 2020 500 screen looks identical and I just assumed they’d all have it - I know now how wrong that is!

Did anyone manage to find a fairly simple way? Or someone that can do it? I’ve been studying the great guide by 595Comp but am a little nervous about going through the car’s code.

Cheers!

Hi,
if you can confirm, if I replace the 5inch unit with DAB and NAV on my car, directly with the 7 inch with DAB and NAV, it will be straight plug and play, no programming needed, is that correct?
Thanks

Hi just changed mine for the above. Please see video, the code screen is unresponsive any help appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello Everyone,
Thanks you so much for all the details,
I just got an Abarth 595 December 2016 with UConnect 7.
DO you know if I can do this manipulation ( the firmware is 21.01.14.01)?
Thank you so much for your help

You should remove the head unit from the dash (about 10 mins work) and read the data on the side or back of the unit. My daughter's 2017 Sport 7" touch unit said W/O car play so no matter how much I assemble the proxy it won't run car play as it's not installed in the unit.

---‐------
2) Fiat 500/ Abarth 595 Radio trim for Uconnect 7 (the 7inch has a different surround to the 5inch).

I can confirm that changing byte 157 and 160 to 01 activated android auto and carplay. however you have to activate both of them for it to work.

but for some reason my phone doesnt charge when plugged in. not sure if i did anything wrong

Hello everyone, nice Michele, as I told you in the presentation I have a 2017 Fiat 500l without navigation system, now my question is I found a 7 inch uconnect with navigator who among you can tell me if just the proxy alignment is enough or there is a need to modify the bytes on the body who can tell me info on this. Thank you
