Hi guys
I knew it was coming, my clutch started to slip tonight in 4 and 5th gears when under load.
So as i have been expecting this for the last couple of years its time to bite the bullet and get it changed.
The cars is a 53 jtd multiwagon, the cost of a velo clutch in euros is £158 and the slave cylinder is £50. Im pretty sure the flywheel is ok as its only slipping in the top two gears under load (but i will obviously re asses that when the box is off).
Anyway, i thought i would ask here, i dont really fancy changing it myself this time of year, its been a number of years since i payed anyone to work on my car as i like to get my hands dirty,
could someone give me a ball park figure on the cost of fitting - i dont mind paying £200 but over that i will do it myself
also is there anything else that i need to watch out for when changing the clutch on the jtd, i can do the 1.6 with my eyes closed now but not pulled the box on the jtd.
cheers
roy

u must be going nesh in your old age Roy;)

Im pretty pure the JTD 80 has a traditional clutch set up like the 1.6 but the 115 has a DMF... It can be mega money for the DMF and a coversion is always an option but if its the 80 i wouldnt wanna be paying much more than 250 incl parts

thanks mate, its a 115bhp not an 80, ive been looking around and it looks around £200 for clutch and slave from euros, but ebay are doing the kit with the slave for about £162. im not happy with ebay as the amount of fakes so if anyone could give me the thumbs up on those clutches i may give it a punt.

im hoping the dmf is ok, but if it needs changing then so be it, i have found them for about for about £420 inc but hoping that wont be needed...
thanks
roy

edit - is it advised to change the dmf on clutch change then?
cheers

LUK (as in the eBay listing) are a good manufacturer for clutch parts but you would need to check with the seller that it's the correct one for your car. There are 3 different clutches and two different concentric slave cylinders for the JTD 115bhp A1.000 engine.

Also, the seller lists it as a 240mm clutch. I think all JTD 115 clutches are 235mm.

It's recommended that a DMF is changed with the clutch but there is a very expensive tool for measuring the wear in it. If the DMF has done about 100,000 miles and you plan on keeping the car, I'd change it anyway.

ouch, im feeling the pain now....
i think i will be doing the job myself when the clutch is completly dead then if that is the recomendation - im gona drive it easy then and hopefully stretch it to the summer months when i dont mind working on the cars (hitting a frozen cold thumb with a hammer always spoils my day lol).
the car is quiet a bit over 100k miles, we are planning on running the car until death of her now as shes such a good example and workhorse.
im gona scour the internets to see if i can get a dmf cheaper then and have a word at a clutch specialist to see what they recomend on the fiats...
can the dmf be remanufactored or is it a throw away item (shouldnt be at that price!!)
thanks again
roy

...Clutch went on my Doblo 1.9 JTD ELX (03)... I was told I needed a new DMF but because it was out of warranty I took to a clutch specialist who reconditioned the DMF and fitted a new clutch for £335 total.

apparently so!

Now you have a 'Tinkerbell' situation (i.e. You DEFINATELY would, just have to figure out HOW!)

maybe a little too far for you but it does seem possible

phew thanks mate, im sure there will be people locally, time to hit the phone line me thinks. at least they can be reconditioned....

the only problem is turn around, if they are gona take weeks then this is a no go for me, but if its a couple of days then its do able.
maybe someone on this board has a worn one that i could pinch and get reconditioned so its ready to go when i approach the job.

what a silly design the dmfs are, i know they smooth out the power from a clunky diesel but surely they could have designed them to last forever or longer than 100k. and at the prices they charge for them stinks.....
thanks rich

just take a look into SMF conversions too though roy. iirc it was covered around the latter half of last year in some depth.

it may not be for you but figured id let you know of another 'possible' option

I had considered the conversion - ive been googling it, do you have the link of it on here?
From what ive been reading vibration maybe an issue, but i dont know if this is the case on the tiny 1.9 engines we have, the threads ive been reading are about 2.5 bmws and ford trucks.
I can imagine it would make the clutch a bit harder and may cause adnormal wear on the plates if there is more vibrations, this could also transferre to the rest of the drive train causing more damage - i will take a look to see what others are reporting.
thanks mate

edit just found the thread, hmmm "smf flywheel" approx same price, more clutch clatter, uprated diff. i think the easier option is a new dmf lol.

the ongoing worry is that it transfers more vibration thru to the box and you may end up damaging the internals. im not so convinced myself but i personally have not heard of/seen any damage resulting from or being attributed to retrofitting a SMF in place of a DMF.

there was another one but i cant find it, apparently one of the fiat van clutches is SMF and it sits on the 115JTD motor and iirc may even have the same box as the cars... but without finding said post i dont want to give you incorrect info/get your hopes up
