You can run a defrag from command prompt you div!

Type; "defrag (drive letter): -a -v"

Right I am not reading things tonight, just saw you put not!

Dave whats the Error Message when you get the blue screen of death, do you have anything plugged into the computer when the laptops booting up such as wireless dongle ?

error booting from hard disk is

I tried booting from an xp cd an got an error there too

ACPI.SYS caused an unexpected error (256) at line 5964 in d:\xpsp\base\boot\setup.c.

Whack it in a caddy, get all the data off and start again! You'll be here all night otherwise. Seems the MBR is stuffed.

Sounds like this might be the only remaining option. Does the computer sill boot into the command prompt ? DId you try chkdsk c: /F

i asked mrs dave to go get me that caddy ages ago, eastenders has finished an i still not got it

i got another hardrive out of an old geicom laptop 8gb one with xp on it, put it in laptop i supposed to be fixing. i goes into a loop on boot up, shows xp screen logo then laptop restarts.

ah ha the old drive in the caddy now work, plug wasnt pushed fully on now scanning it for errors

oo caddy has started working again, now copying everything off the old drive

i dont have nothing to create an image of the old drive

this caddy doing my nut in, some times it work some times it dont. do the front usb ports on my puter have less power than the back ones?
