Hi All,

Had problems getting the car to start recently turns out the transponder in the main remote key has failed.

Spare key starts the car fine (non remote type), phoned fiat they wanted £240 for a new remote and £205 for a standard non remote key.

Anyone recommend a auto locksmith in Nottingham? Local one (3D auto keys) wants £80 for a new non remote key.

Any recommendations?

Timpsons did a non remote key for me for £45, they copied it from the working key.

For the remote, there's some threads on here where people fixed there key and i think it was a dry solder. Mine was completely broken so I fitted a remote £8 central locking kit from ebay, which has been fitted neigh on 2 years now and i have a fob for each key.

The above has worked well for me but many wouldn't want to go that route, as being non original.
 
Timpson's can cut and program one as long as you still have a working key.

Not sure it is technically the best option, but was cheaper (£45 I think) than Fiat dealer (£130 for key, £60 for programming), and I was in a hurry.

Much bigger deal if you don't have a working key to copy - Fiat dealer or specialist lock service seem to be the only options then.

Thanks for the reply, the remote central locking still works it just won't start the car.

I have the genuine spare which works fine no problem, is the kit off eBay able to fix the problem? If so, what do I search for?

Have heard timpsons are worth ago, my plan was to have the remote key and the new spare from timpsons on the same key ring then I can use the one for remote central locking and the other to start the car mainly for the convenience however if anyone has a better or cheaper idea let me know!

Also just to add the remote key will start the car occasionally but its intermittent, any ideas or could this be repaired?

Just an idea.... haven't tried it yet, but it may work as long as the transponder in the remote key is completely dead and you are willing to experiment.
Get Timpsons to cut and program a key.
Very carefully remove the transponder chip (in a red plastic holder pushed in to the key) and fix it inside the top of the remote fob.
If all is well, you should have a working remote key again.
However, I haven't done it myself yet, so can't guarantee it will work.
Also, the chip seems to be made of glass, and is very fragile, so there is a good chance of breaking it.

As I said, just an idea. But should work (theoretically)

may well work , but I'd rather do the re-soldering first..:)
 
Definitely. But if it is completely dead, I reckon it could be neater than having to carry a second key.
Will need to be trying it sometime as my remote fob transponder is definitely dead, despite resoldering it.
Previous owner stood on remote fob, so it was in 3 pieces when I got it. Fixed the remote buttons but transponder was beyond help.
Besides, I'm much too tight fisted to pay for a new remote key which would cost more than the car did!
 
Thanks all for the info, much appreciated. Looks like I have a few options to explore! I have looked at the transponder bit on the key and the soldering looks okay to me. Attached is a picture of the part I think is the transponder, is that right? Also have found that by banging the key around several times eventually it will start the car.

I was sold a Panda with a remote key that did not start the car, but turned the locks and remote opened the doors.

I was qiuoted silly prices for a new remote fob too. the last key I had cut was for an Uno and cost about £4 so no way I was paying £200+

I did the Timpsons trick about 4 years ago... got them to program up a new a transponder into my cars ECU, and they put it in my existing remote fob... job done and no need to cut a key. think I paid £30 for the pleasure and it's been OK since :D

Took a bit of explaining and I was prepaired to pop the chip in myself but they insisted they did it.

yours sounds like a solder issue. Lead free solder is cack.
 
Exactly the same happened to mine. Paid £240 for a new key which came from fiat, then had to be programmed into the car ecu.

That was for a non-remote key. A remote key was going to be north of £300
 
the cheap keys from shops are clone keys , they will work fine until the host key is no longer in the system , these are clone keys , clone keys work fine all the time their host key is in the system , they stop working when the host key is deleted.

to explain this better , a cheap clone key is a clone of your existing key , so for instance you take your original key to a shop that does these clone keys , they read the data on your key and copy it to a cloning chip , you now have 2 keys with the same data , the car doesnt know the clone key exists , it believes that its the same key ie your original.

now lets say you lose your remote key and want a new remote key programming , when the new remote is coded the lost remote is deleted and banned from the system , as your cheap clone key is a clone of the lost remote key that is now deleted , the clone key stops working as its data is no longer in the system , and as a cloning chip cannot be programmed back into the car .

you are always better off paying the extra and having a proper spare key properly programmed as this can be recoded to the car in the above scenario , clone keys are cheap but in above scenario becomes scrap .
 
A local locksmiths will cut and code a new key for around £65, I have had 2 done, avoid Timpsons like the plague. The advice from the locksmith is to keep and original spare tucked away just in case.... so i only use the fresh cut keys and not the good spare.

I think what the post is trying to get at

if you clone a key. You have two identical key.

I you have one stolen. A locksmith will delete the original key leaving you with no key to start the car.

Dont see it as a big problem. In the last 10 year its never happened to me or see anyone else struggle

you be back to doing a all keys lost. Which would be the same as if you haddent cloned a key in the First place

After all how many people delete all the keys and program a new one when buying a car. The person selling the car potentially has a duplicate key and address of the keeper. I would if it was a £100K car but a 10 year Old Panda the risk is very low
