H/C rule 115 simply says you should
use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if
fitted, at night in built-up areas and in
dull daytime weather, to ensure that you
can be seen
In this context, 'should' isn't a legal requirement - although the use of lights in the rain is a great idea.

i elarnt in summer so also dont know on light rules

i drive with main beam (second click) at night
and highbeam when no street lights since my lights are crap
i do dip the high beam when i hear / see another car / person /bike

Daz, main beam and highbeam are the same think.

You mean dipped beam all the time except when the road is dark and clear and then main beam

Sort of getting OT, but I drive with my lights on at all times - not that I'm not visible enough in a yellow car but hey, better safe than sorry.

Ditto. I've even fitted DRL's to the Stilo :D

There is a seperate thread about DRLs.
But anyway, again, loads of research done about this subject pointing to increased visibility.
I think the Swedes did the initial research, hence the constant lighting on Volvos.
Strangely I don't think car colour matters if people don't look where they are going as they pull out at junctions. Some barely glance around them, giving no thought to any blind spots created by their car bodywork (door frames/window frames etc).

My bus has some really excellent blind spots. I had a sticker in line of sight in my OS window "speed limiter fitted" :D
That's now relocated but the bodywork does hinder the view. If it hadn't been for the fact that I always look both ways a few times as well as move my head backwards & forwards, I'd have pulled out on a few things by now - the worst one being a cement mixer - how the heck do you not see one of those?
