Hi! Sorry this will be a long post, so if you aren't interested in helping me solve a mechanical mystery then read no further!

I have a 2002 Fiat Punto. Last Friday, I went to drive it and out of the blue it wouldn't start. I turned the key, the lights came on and the stereo worked but the engine didn't even try to turn over, no noise at all. I called the breakdown and they attached a charging pack to the battery which started the engine. So he sold me a new battery for £72. I was abit miffed since we'd bought our last one about a year ago, but I had to get to work and I was just glad it was working.

I drove as normal for the weekend but then on Tuesday morning the exact same thing again! I called the breakdown and they sent out the same guy, now I was really annoyed for buying the battery but I let him try to solve the problem. The battery was charged this time, so he looked at the starter motor. He said it was loose so tightened it. He also said it was missing one bolt and to come in to his own garage next week to have it properly fixed but it would be fine now to drive.

Later that day I headed out and after about 2 miles I stopped at traffic lights on a slight hill. I went to drive off and stalled, so I thought. I restarted the engine, drove forward a tiny bit then stalled again?! A few more times I restarted and moved barely a few inches and the car would stall. After a few times the engine wouldn't start at all. I was in the middle of a huge dual carriage way and had to call the police to block the road. Terrifying. Anyway I called the breakdown back. While I was waiting I tried the engine again. I was able to move forward a few metres before stalling. Then with one last attempt I managed to get it into a bus stop thank God. When the breakdown arrived he started the engine, no problems, drove it around the block and told me I was just a bad driver, and kept stalling it :D (I have driven for almost 10 years I don't do that!) He made me drive it home by myself which was scary and just said scrap it if I wanted to. I went home traumatised and booked it in with our mechanic.

Yesterday I went to try the engine and it won't start. But this time it tries to turn over but won't ignite. *sighs* I don't know if I should just give up on it, I am very sentimentally attached to this car and have recently spend £300 on it (plus £72 for a battery! :D) Any ideas wtf is going on?!

Thanks for reading this long post :)

Soo....
You have a no start situation.... key turned to crank position but nothing happens
All electronics are bright and happy

Youve got a new battery so plenty of juice.....

Ive got 3 things in my head

Damaged wires - either battery to starter
Crapped out earth
Or the wire to the solenoid is damaged/corroded

Starters crapped out and sticking.....

Ignition switch isnt actually doing owt.....

I think.... its gonna be wiring.....

If when it fails to start
Give the positive wire a good wiggle as it goes near the back of the engine...

I suspect that corrosions getting the best of it a wiggle may re-create the connection

I had a similar issue and I knew it wasn't the battery... trip to Halfords and bought replacement earth lead (£3) they do 3 different lengths. Removed the battery and battery tray to access the Earth point where it connects to the inner wing, unbolted that and gave it a good clean and made sure it was making a good contact, Replaced the lead to the Gearbox (Couldn't undo the original, but I'm sure Ziggy can tell you what a PITA they are) so ran the new lead as a secondary connection to the box. Problem was solved and Engine seemed to run smoother after as well
