Well, I've been registered on the forum for 18 months, I thought it was about time for my 2nd post...

After some invaluable help from forum members Tifosi V8 and Medlow - whose opinions I value highly since they had the same good taste as me in previous cars ;) - I picked up our Electroclash Grey Panda 100hp on Wednesday last week. It enjoyed a gentle pootle around the city during the latter half of the week and then a motorway journey up to the other half's parents' house in Cumbria. It performed well on both counts. I was pleasantly surprised about the relative refinement on the motorway. My test drive had only included a brief stint on a dual carriageway and it was with Clarkson's ridicule of the 100hp's motorway manners lodged firmly in my mind that we set off up the M6 on a friday evening. What was I worried about?! JC may find the cabin noisy and the engine weedy but, then, wouldn't you when you're used to your SL55s, XC90s and the various uber-saloons he gets to waft around in on a daily basis? I must say, coming from a VX, I can't see what his problem was. I would imagine that I could have quite comfortably sat at around 85 all the way up the M6 to Carlisle - without developing even the smallest headache - if this wasn't illegal, of course.

Anyway, up in deepest, darkest cumbria is where my fun with the Panda started...

Girlfriend's brother recently landed himself a 53-plate boxster and we were eager to get out on the road and see how the two matched up. We have a well-worn test route that has seen planty of action from our past steeds (namely a Leon Cupra, Clio 172, VX220 and Clio 182) and encompasses pretty much all surfaces, inclines, descents, hairpins, straights, lumps, bumps, cambers and any other car-testing road features you'd care to imagine. So, we fuelled up (him £60, me £30) and headed out towards Hartside. Now, it goes without saying that the Porsche could clearly romp away from the 100hp on any given straight, without so much as breaking a sweat, but I was given the honour of leading our little convoy and it was with great pleasure that, on numerous occasions, I had to wait for the boxster to catch up after a series of medium to tight bends. I'm not suggesting that the Panda is 'faster' than the Porker, or that I'm a better driver than GF's brother, but the key lies with the absolute ease with which I found I could jump into the Fiat and fling it into and around corners, even after only a few days ownership. I think much of my advantage was knowing that I could barrel into corners carrying a little too much speed and not have to worry about braking halfway through the bend, if necessary. Having also owned a mid-engined car, I know full-well that the last thing one usually wants to do in one of those is exaggerate that pendulum effect by transferring more weight by braking whilst turning. This can lead to a sudden lack of talent followed by ruinously expensive repair bills.

Anyway, all in all, we had an amazing day out on the Alston moors and the 100hp returned an average of 30mpg. Smashing.

Now the bit you've all been waiting for... indeed, the bit most of you have skipped to... PICS!

Oh, and fond look back at what I had to part with 18 months ago:

Good write-up - thanks. And the right colour, as well. The 100HP will put 95 miles in an hour even more comfortably than 85 as it's on a better part of the torque curve at 4500 revs. (Avoid errant pheasants - see Ouch thread.)

You see, it's threads exactly like this that annoy me so much; just when I think I'm getting over not having a 100HP, along comes a cracking write-up to remind me what got me all obsessed 34 months ago!

Anyway - my personal bitterness aside - a great read SAPD, and great pics! Let's hear some more, may be in another eighteen months? ;)

Good read and am glad you are enoying the car. Certainly agree that the 100hp is very easy to drive quickly. I've history of mid-engined cars (supercharged mk1 MR2's) and I know what you mean about the weight transfer issue!

In fact i'd go as far to say that you'll bring in trail braking more and more as the rear end is pretty hard to unstick for the most part.

Good review, nice to hear your enjoying the car, i had a similar feeling the first week of driving it and still amazes me now... :D
Got any mods planned for it?
I think the most essential thing is de-oranging the front, cheap and very easy to do ending up with a spectacular end result! (y)

Get some Osram Diadem indicator lights front and back.

Like this: nuovapandahp.forumcommunity.net/?t=10919939

Purely subjective, of course, but I can't see anything wrong with the existing indicators and certainly couldn't get excited about changing them.

The 'Phillips Silver Vision' indicator bulbs are a great modification IMO, it certainly cleans up the look of the front end of the car.

The orangeness DOES look different on a red car - but I still couldn't be bothered. Do these bulbs still flash orange as the law demands? If so, I presume you avoid using the indicators as they spoil the effect.

lol yeah they still flash orange.

You've convinced me (!) - not enough to change my bulbs now, but when the existing ones lose their orangeness - my lamented Cinquecento Sporting failed its MOT a couple of years back for this - I'll fit Osram Diadems.

My old Fabia failed for (among other things!) one of the rear indicators not being orange enough for the tester. I thought he was taking the pi$$ when he told me :ROFLMAO:

Mentioning Hartside in your post reminds me of some mental behaviour that I indulged in, for some inexplicable reason, in Sept last year.
I had time on my hands and was bored with driving from Sunderland to Carlisle the usual way. I'd read about the famous sausage rolls at the Hartside Cafe, so decided to drive to Carlisle through Weardale, to Alston then over Hartside to Penrith and up the M6.
I had the Panda Climbing 4x4 then, not very powerful but its handling made up for that. Lovely run, especially at the Western end of Weardale where the roads are quiet and the bends are great fun.
Stopped at Hartside, had my sausage roll (overrated), then descended down to Penrith. Stuck behind a bog-standard Golf and getting annoyed as he took each corner very slowly but I didn't have the power to overtake when he accelerated on the straights.
Finally, found a slightly bendy bit but with good visibilty so took off and overtook. That's when the Panda decided to dance about the road for some reason (it was a bit damp).
Anyway, after a brown-trouser moment I regained control. Mr. Golf driver pipped his horn, despite the fact that I was well past him when things went a bit pear-shaped.
After that I just flew down into Penrith in a rather pathetic attempt to lose Mr. Golf and show him what a prat I thought he was.
Fun, but it shows you what a pillock a 51 year old with a Panda 4x4 can be.
