A friend has windows xp pro on their pc, everything works fine except we cant find my computer anywhere! its not in the start menu or when you got to display properties--customize desktop--and try to tick my computer (its "greyed" out) we also cant get into folder options. my computer shows up in windows explorer but when you create a shortcut on the desktop it opens a blank window!

im totally baffled by it, anyone got any suggestions?

yu might have to try and get into adminastrators settings and enable the computer icon in there

if that doesnt work try repairing windows through ur xp disk .

its not a hacked version of windows is it (and its not been used on another computer )

i logged in as local admin, could try repair but thats last resort - starting to think it might be a reg tweak or someone's messed about with group policy editor...(n)

You can either from desktop:- right click>properties>click desktop tab>customise desktop (bottom left) and tick my computer. Dunno if thats what Stu was meaning also?

Or just press windows key or start key or the one between control and alt! and e to open up explorer or my computer.

thanks for the reply, the above option is greyed out:(

when i click my computer in windows explorer it just displays a blank pane too:bang:

if you can check group policy go to here:

User config - admin templates - desktop

look to the pane and you can see the remove my computer from desktop. just set to not configured or disabled.

not too sure if it's not that. greyed out normally points at rights issue or group policy/ reg tweak.

any registry wizards here as its in there somewhere:confused::idea:

ok, First.

Go to the key, export it, and save it somewhere you can get to it. Id this fails, you then have to right click the origional keys and click merge and you are back where you were before. (Just incase anything goes wrong doing this will take you back to where you are now)..

Try checking this out in registry, let me know if it works.

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
NonEnum]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
NonEnum]
Name: {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = show, 1 = remove)

HTH,

Carl.
