Panda (Classic) My 4x4 - The Muddy Pics!

Introduction

Hey everyone as I've only just joined I thought I'd post some more pictures to show you lovely lot what we're all about up here in the bleak North.

Both me and my mate have Pandas, mine's the '87 and his the '89, both Italian Racing Grey.

As I've previously said, although we put the Pandas through their paces we take good care of the old lasses because we want the fun to keep coming.

I hope you enjoy the pics as much as we enjoy making them! :D

Some of these pics are from a while ago, I'll get some new ones up soon :)
Looking beasty Andy, I'm going to get some new tyres for mine before Italy...are those available on 13" wheels as well? Didn't appear to be on tyres direct at least...I'll probably just buy some more Malatesta Trac stuff but maybe worth shopping around (assuming I can still as tyres direct are out of stock it seems :()

Hope all goes well with the sills...reminds me of a mini which we bought that had sill repair plates glued on over the rusty ones!

I don't think this tread patern is available in the 13", only the Trac 4x4 tyre is. All the tyres are available to view on the website, to get these I just rang tyres direct up and gave them the reference number from the ziarelli website.

Are you taking the nobblies on a spare set of wheels or driving there on the nobblies?

I'm thinking driving down with the nobblies on as the extra weight will be the main issue. We really struggled and over heated in Morocco with all the weight in the poor thing and that was with much less heat than we are likely to see in Italy

But yeah, I've checked and the Ziarellis are not available in 13" :( bit of a shame they look good. The Malatestas are pretty capable though, so happy to stick with them for now.

Sooo who wants to see some ROT?

Ouch. Well been there done that. Quite a bit of work but not impossible! See my post from 6 years ago, might be helpful. (my sill repair is still going strong I might add!).
Though in your position I would consider welding in box section

OK, i'm about half way through the repair. As there are others in a similar boat, thought it might be helpful if I posted a cut-away diagram of what the sills (should) look like and how i'm going about the repair.

1. The floor, inner sill, and outer sill all meet at the bottom where they are spot welded together.
The corner between floor and the inner sill is filled with seam sealant.

2. After cutting away the rust (and the spot welded seam) you'll be left with three unconnected panels.

3. Weld the floor to the inner sill. RED

4. Form a new lower inner sill GREEN BIT and weld the top edge to the floor.

5. Finally complete the sill by welding a final piece BLUE BIT to the lower outer sill and to the new lower inner sill GREEN BIT

Towards the rear of the sill (behind the door and next to the rear seat) it's a bit more tricky. Not sure what it's like on 2wd cars but the leaf spring mounts restrict access. You will need to weld the "floor section" repair from underneath the car. Here's a figure to show the original sill and how my repair will be done.

As I say I'm half way through my repairs at step 4, with one more bit to fit in. I'll put some pics up shortly.
