Panda (Classic) My 4x4 - The Muddy Pics!

Introduction

Hey everyone as I've only just joined I thought I'd post some more pictures to show you lovely lot what we're all about up here in the bleak North.

Both me and my mate have Pandas, mine's the '87 and his the '89, both Italian Racing Grey.

As I've previously said, although we put the Pandas through their paces we take good care of the old lasses because we want the fun to keep coming.

I hope you enjoy the pics as much as we enjoy making them! :D

Some of these pics are from a while ago, I'll get some new ones up soon :)
Finally got car washed after the Panday, next set of rotten rims is off in for blasting. I've decided the 14s are going to take a back seat until I put a bigger engine in. They are just too big and heavy for the 999 to run on, they are hindering me noticeably up hills and causing too much upset. I've just ordered a set of 13" nobly tyres for now and I'll do some nice artwork on the standard rims to keep it individual.

Yes mate I remember your Panda in trouble at international meeting.

When you will change your engine everything will work perfectly !! :)

1.242 cc 8 valves engine with CMG collectors, open exhaust & a good remap of ECU (to get the maximum torque).

Your tyres will become very very light !!
Just be careful in the extreme mud situations, you could break the gearbox, because that engine is overpowered and the wheels are heavy.

One of our members got 118 NM & 75 hp at 2.500 RPMs. :D :D

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but - out of interest Kestrel, which bit of the gearbox breaks in these situations?

I don't know the proper word to explain it.
Trying with a translator it should be : "bevel"

It is what happened to andrea65 during the international meeting (the mechanical who helped Simon, do you remember him ?? )

He drives that particular Panda in the picture below, he lost all the gearbox oil after destroying the bevel.

They towed him outside the gallop.

That was quick! -
Yes I remember what happened that day, but I didn't see where he did it or what was going on at the time.
Next day when we were heading home the car looked very forlorn at the bottom of the hill with a flat tyre and bent winch mount too. I felt sorry for it and hope all is good again now.(y)
Don't know what the bevel might be - any chance of a photograph of the broken part so that we can begin stockpiling them for the future please?

I've nearly got my 13" rims ready for the smaller off-road rubber. No messing about this time, three coats of black tank paint and a spot of red detailing. A week to dry and then they'll be getting the new treads.

Oh no!
Does that mean that the 70euro back box packed up already?
Is it time for stainless steel one in Si style? Group buy? I'm in.

Well mate I can't fault the back box to be honest!! It's the fact that my legendary bodge to hold it on back in Italy (cable ties) has finally failed, so it was time to install a new rear bush (the one that bolts on) the original one broken when the old exhaust fell off just after crossing the channel, so I had to cut the old bolt off and re-drill some mounting holes in the bracket. Beware, the following image contains rust...

So just this evening I've had yet another prop shaft support bearing fail, this one I only put on just before the Italy trip, and I didn't even drive to or from Italy with the shaft on the car. This was another one of the £30 eBay ones supposedly guaranteed for 12 months.

Has anybody managed to source any original replacement parts or even OE spec replacement bearings? If I can't get hold of any better quality replacements I think I'm going to try and just replace the bearing itself and put the original rubber support back onto a new bearing race.

Heva a look on them ones, all have same ID and inner race as Panda
Most of them have dust lip, and can be easly fitted/ converted to meet with cetral prop carrier .

birth make decent quality stuff but not a bearing manufacturer themselves i don't think... End of the day its a bearing - get the measurements and you should be able to find a replacement online. The PAS bearing on my bravo is silly money from motor factors or direct from fiat but bit of research discovered its the same as a certain uno front wheel bearing which could be had for £20 ish. Think i went for a SPK bearing but thats kinda irrelevant other than the fact its a company that produces bearings, thats what they do, and i have heard of them.

in my experience bearings last until the worst possible moment to fail... had a noisy idler pulley on a car once that was a little bit noisy for ages and ages - when it finally let go and resulted in shredding all the aux belts and losing PAS etc was the day some nice person set their dog on my cat and i really needed to get him to the vets quick smart. I just drove anyway at the time as he was bleeding quite alot but anyone who has driven a car with electric pas thats not working can tell you, pretty heavy! lol
