Technical multiwagon rear bushes

Technical multiwagon rear bushes

The bushes shouldn't be under any stress or twist once replaced.

The 2 center bolts shouldn't be tightened until the weight of the car and wheels are on the ground.
Thanks Davern, tightening all suspension bolts with the vehicle on the ground was week 1 of my apprenticeship. Have you had a look at the setup on a ramp or in a pit, i.e. fully loaded. I will check them again when I've finished fitting the new bush. Thanks again, M A (BOLTS ANYONE???)

Thank you John, that's the best idea I've heard. Internal bore for the bush on the axle/subframe is ............................... 66.6(6), ......... no it 'really' IS... the bush is 67.2(ish), you do the maths! I got my bush from shop4parts and it's definately tapered, so sort of 66.8/9 to 67.2/3.

All measurements are approx depending on air temp, how much you "CLEAN" the axle bore and how much you "CLEAN" the bush. I tried to just clean away any glue?, rust or paint from the bore and I only wire wheeled the bush(before freezing).

I put the bush in the freezer(24hrs+) and a halagon heater under the axle bush mount, they both ended up as close as they ever will be and the bush went in just right(y), using the puller design posted on this thread.(oh! and an old wheel bearing with 3 legs ground into it).

Questions? Happy to help, M A.

hi, looked on ebay for bushes and found some for £65
called in at my local fiat dealer today 22/06/10 and was told
£18 odds plus vat each. Getting them tomorrow.
will let you know how I get on with the change over.

Going to start on friday after work, wish me luck.

cheers Willie

Good morning, how are doing the bushes Willie, I have just done one with a VERY heavy duty home made puller (as per this thread), worked a treat, needs a mod though as I needed more space for the bush to stick out past flush.

Isn't it 'good' how fiat stock the bushes but tell me the bolts(mine were bodged last time!) to fit them are not on there system(be careful with bolts guys & gals, I can now get them from a local specialist, he's a HERO(y))

If I can help give me a shout, MA

Fitted some on mine on Saturday and my fiat dealer provided bolts and nuts from Fiat. Desira Group PLC, they do mail order.

Thanks everybody for all the useful information.

After reading the problems encountered, I took my Stilo to a local garage where they replaced the bushes for £180.:)

just have a closer look how the bolt is twisted inside the rubber of the bush whilst the rear beam is pivoting - i guess a polybush will never allow that kind of complicated movement.
the bush does not simply pivot around the bolt but also changes it's angle towards the center line fixed by the bolt....

:) Has anyone looked into rose jointed bushes such as those fitted to the back of a vectra? These are solid, with maximum articulation...i've no idea if there are any that would fit a Stilo MW?

Also fitted to Saab might be a possibility if some dimentions were given..from this pic they look a little short in length..but hard to comment from a pic really..

Edit..

Width- 52mm
Inner Dia- 12mm
OUTER Dia - 45MM..

yep its a real naff design, if the beam was bolted to the car squarely then we wouldnt have this problem in the first place and we could fit poly bushes on the cars, the design really puts a lot of stress on the bush which in turn causes the inevitable failures.

....but I thought the rear bush design by it's very intent alters rear geometry under hard cornering.

Surely you wouldn't want to lose that :chin:

Can the rear axle bushes be changed without having to completely remove back axle from car?
