hi, my first post on here, i have a multipla 115bhp jtd, had few months now and just love it.
on a few occasions now i have had a complete loss of power (no turbo kicking in) , very scary on mway with wife and 4 kiddies in car!.
this seems to happen when engine is hot after good run, seems fine on short runs. no engine light warning or message at all.
typical scenario is: on mway cruising along 70 mph, slow down for roadworks for few miles at 40mph, go to accelerate at end of roadworks and no response at all!... drop down gears press on accelerator and car springs back to life.
aving read posts on here, 3 things seem probable causes

egr valve

maf sensor

turbo boost valve

does anyone have the answer?, which of these is most likely?, or is it something else entirely?, could it be fuel filter even?

any help at all will be very very appreciated, the multi is our lifeline and with holidays soon arriving i need her right. thank you. mark :)

i would go for egr ,mine was doing the same i could not go faster than 80 km ,and a lot of black smoke ,after the egr cleaning everything was ok power back and a little smoke i am going to clean the egr every year now because driving mostly in city is causing this problem

I would go with Egr valve about £145 new or try a clean. Useful post here

Access on Multipla is alot tighter.
Also sometimes the MAF try running it disconnected if it runs ok, buy a new MAF,do not buy a cheap one, they are rubbush, only a proper Bosch one works properly, about £80
Hi, i'm no way an expert but it seems to me a blocked egr valve would cause a constant general loss of power, not the sudden loss you talk about? More likely to be the MAF sensor?

When my egr valve was sticking the car could be fine one minute then the symptoms would show up.

Sometimes it would happen on the motorway and it was if you had hit a strong headwind and a hill at the same time. Speed and power would just drop off.

Other instances were at a turning into a side road. I drove up to the side road fine then had to stop for traffic then proceeded to turn across the road but there was no power it was like trying to drive in 4th gear instead of 1st.

If these symptoms are what is happening then I'd put my money on it being the EGR valve.

One test you can do is when the symptoms show up is to take it out of gear and press the accellerator to the floor this will force the EGR valve to open/close (not sure which way it is) and the symptoms should go away. This was how the AA diagnosed mine and was also a handy temporary 'fix'.

hi, many thanks for all replies.
i took off and cleaned the egr valve (nightmare to take off, not good for large hands!).
car now runs better than when purchased!!.
seriously, cleaning the egr (which was rammed full of soot), has made a
HUGE difference.
i also drilled a hole at back of electrical part to spray in wd40 and free
plunger-worked a treat.
car is so responsive now-definately a routine service thing to do.
