Hello - new here and gratefully looking for any advice.
Our new (second hand) 90k miles ELX Multipla broke down suddenly while on holiday driving in Holland.
The symptoms were a sudden loss of power (about 50 per cent!) and a very clacky sounding engine.
Managed to limp back to campsite at 30mph & opened up the bonnet.
Plenty of coolant oil & water, no leaking gaskets. It's a petrol but it sounded like a diesel after the fault developed.
My thinking is that it was a sudden loss of timing or cam belt tensioner, don't know if any other pumps are in line with the timing belt, that might have failed or caused the fault.
Most grateful for any technical input.
Car has been left at Fiat dealership in Holland for investigation. They want 100 euros to initially investigate the fault but I am thinking that if it is an expensive cam belt fault it might as well be scrapped. The timing belt was replaced by previous owner 10k or so miles ago.

. . . The timing belt was replaced by previous owner 10k or so miles ago.
By the owner, or by a Garage (receipts?)?

As you know, if the Belt snaps completely, the Engine is 'dead' (won't run), so it's possible it's just stripped a tooth or two, or the tensioner has failed and it's jumped a tooth (or more).
Either way, you'll probably have a couple of bent valves at least.

I really hope it's something simpler though . . .

Yes..unfortunately this turns out to have been done by a relative of the previous owner, who was a 'mechanic'.
tbh though we had had 1000 trouble free miles and the car seemed really up together with a years MOT.
The car still turned over and started but wouldn't idle.
I probably made things worse driving it back to where we we're staying but didn't fancy breaking down in the middle of a busy city.
I hope it hasn't damaged any of the valves but I guess it's quite likely. It's a shame because in England it would have had a decent scrap value.
