Hey guys I brought a 2003 Fiat from a dealer earlier this month and the tax was due to expire today. I just tried to renew the tax only to find out that the MOT has expired... in May last year.

The dealer told me that it wasn't going to expire until May this year. I have the original ad here to prove that is the case but in the mean time I can't tax the car. I'm new to the UK so I have no idea how I should proceed. I am about to call the dealer to see if he will do an MOT for me but what should I do in regards to TAX in the time being? Do I have to do the SORN thing? and if I do that and get an MOT next week can I just ring up and pay for tax or is it some sort of complicated procedure?

Thanks

Did you not check the paperwork yourself?!

Not sure how you should proceed but that sucks to be done over and you've only just moved here. We're not all like that, you know. :p

Where did you move from?

Na stupid mistake on my part, I just didn't even think to check it as it had it's current Tax disc and I thought that it was displayed on that. He was going to provide me with insurance as well so I'm pretty sure that he hasn't done it to me on purpose he's just made a mistake. Could it be possible that it has been done and not updated in the online system?

He must have got it MOT'd literally days before he renewed the tax, obviously you can;t have tax without an MOT.

It's very, very unlikely that it's an admin mistake. Phone the DVLA and ask them, I suppose there's always a minute chance it could happen.

Hope you enjoy your (temp/perm?) stay! :)

p.s FOTC.

Yeah the Tax was renewed on the 4/4/11, and from what I can tell the MOT expired on the 5/5/11.

Just called him and he said bring it down and he'll do one for £35 instead of the usual £60. I don't really mind paying that as long as there's no other issues.

Myes that's what I'm worried about. I think if it comes to that I still have the ad which states that the vehicle had a valid MOT until May 2012 so I can either try and get my money back or work out some sort of a deal.

Actually this raises a few issues for me. As the Tax runs out today. Does that mean I have to ring up and do the SORN thing?

always trading standards. how much for a test!!!!!
mpanies cannot charge what they like for an MOT, there's an official maximum. Many companies promote cheaper tests, not that surprising when you consider that often this guarantees they get the repair business too. The maximum test costs are £54.85 for cars or motor caravans and £29.65 for motorbikes. For a full list see the Direct Gov website.

Good news everyone, I am a complete knob. I just went through all of my documentation again and found the current MOT certificate!! Turns out when the MOT was given the car had a different registration. Which see weird becuase it says that the MOT was given on the 8/05/12 and the TAX disc which was from 31/01/11 says it was printed off on 04/04/11 but the Tax disc has my current registration on it... how does that work?!?!

Hmm, can't see how that works, if it was a 'personal plate' reg it should be on both MOT and tax (AFAIK), if it just looks like a regular number plate on the MOT cert then either it is for a different car, or the testing station entered it incorrectly when testing the vehicle, in which case they should issue a corrected certificate otherwise VOSA will still show your vehicle as not having a valid MOT certificate.

holyhell I'm getting the run around from the DVLA and VOSA each one is saying that the other is the only one that can fix my mess.

Either way I'm probably not going to have this sorted today, can I just leave the tax until I get this sorted (and not drive around of course) or do I need to do the SORN thing and then renew once I have this sorted?

mmm just got off the phone for the 3rd time with the DVLA, only way I can sort it out is to go down to the DVLA in person and do it. goddammit

I wouldn't be fannying around like that. You bought a car from a dealer which was advertised with tax and test. The fact that there are problems with re-taxing the car should not be your problem. I'd get down to your local trading standards.
